One of only 25 produced in 1970, this Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 earned the prestigious NCRS Bowtie Award at the 2015 National Convention. The culmination of a graduated judging regime, the Bowtie Award is given only to unrestored cars successfully judged and voted to be historically and educationally significant in four areas (Interior, Exterior, Mechanical and Chassis). The NCRS One-, Two- or Three- Star Awards are achieved by a successful judging and voting in any one, two or three of the four listed areas. A successful judging and voting in all four areas automatically earns the NCRS 4-Star Bowtie Award. That is a tall mountain to climb, but this highly original 1970 ZR1 is worthy of such recognition. The ZR1 has achieved legendary status as the ultimate iteration of the heart-stopping LT-1 Corvette, designed as it was to rule the SCCA's B Production class. Essentially a detuned racing engine, the 350 CI LT-1 was jam-packed with everything needed to produce well over its official rating of 370 HP: a virtually indestructible bottom end and forged rotating assembly, high-volume 850 CFM Holley 4-barrel with vacuum Secondaries on a tuned dual-plane aluminum intake manifold, high-flow heads with big-block-sized 2.02-inch intake and 1.94-inch exhaust valves, and a special solid-lifter cam. Transistorized ignition and .002-inch extra skirt clearance guaranteed high-speed reliability, and the requisite Muncie M22 Rock Crusher 4-speed and Positraction differential ensured robustness throughout the drivetrain. The ZR1 package added an L88-grade racing chassis and brake equipment, including special springs and shocks with reinforced mounting points, front and rear stabilizer bars, heavy-duty power brakes and a special aluminum radiator with a metal shroud. Unrestored with mostly original paint and showing a mere 16,289 original miles, this 1970 ZR1 coupe was delivered new to England-Cook Chevrolet, Inc., in Lansing, Michigan, finished in Laguna Gray with a black leather interior and equipped with a 4.11:1 rear end, tinted glass and Goodyear Polyglas tires on Rally wheels. Documentation for this exceptional factory race Corvette includes the original tank sticker, Protect-O-Plate and invoice. |
