Car history:
1970 big block Corvette Convertible in immaculate condition. The car looks amazing, runs well, and is an awesome driver that is ready to be enjoyed. It also features a new Richmond 5-Speed manual transmission that is significantly better then the original Muncie and really makes this car much more enjoyable on the highway. This Corvette is priced to sell, always turns heads, and gets a TON of attention going down the road. The car is finished in the beautiful and highly desirable color combination of Red over Black. The market on these chrome bumper Corvettes is red hot right now. There is no way this car could be duplicated with this level of quality for anything near our asking price. While this Corvette is not completely numbers matching it does have a 3999289 Chevrolet engine block, which was used in C3 big block Corvettes. The block is also has a 1970's casting date code. The engine also features a set of Edlebrock Performer RPM aluminum high performance cylinder heads, and a 6263753 intake manifold, which was also used in C3 big blocks. As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle. We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did. We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.
Exterior: The bright red exterior is in brilliant condition. As one can see in the photos the finish has a dazzling gloss, smooth finish, and deep shine. The body is straight and both doors open and shut nicely. The chrome bumpers show very well. The wheels and center caps are in excellent condition with a nice finish and no curb rash. The Hoosier tires are correctly sized 225/70R15. The soft-top is in nice shape and the rear window is not yellowed or foggy. The top itself operates well and opens and closes easily. Unlike many Corvettes from this era the fit of the windows to the soft top is pretty good. Often Corvettes will have particularly chipped up front ends, this car does not. There are a couple very faint imperfections around the car that were too small to show up in photos, but nothing that is really noticeable from about five feet away. As one can see in the many photos of the underside, this Corvette is totally solid with absolutely no rust issues. There is no rust around the key hole area of the frame in front of the rear tires and no evidence of corrosion around the windshield or birdcage, the most common areas for rust on C3 Corvettes. The Stingray looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.
Interior: The black interior of the Corvette looks fantastic and has been completely restored. The seats look virtually brand new with no split seems, rips, or signs of wear. The carpet is also new and in great condition with no tears, holes, or stains. This includes the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The dash and console are in excellent condition with no fading, cracks, or sun damage. The radio gets good reception and most importantly the dash was never cut or modified for the installation. The door panels are in excellent condition and look pretty much brand new. The jack and jack handle are present and stowed correctly behind the passenger seat. This car has not been smoked in and there is no aroma of cigarettes. Please note that when the seats were restored and the new foam and padding installed that there is limited space for the driver between the steering wheel and seat so any perspective buyer should make sure he or she fits in the car. The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.
Mechanical: This Corvette seems to be in good mechanical condition. The car is blisteringly fast as one would image with this much power from the big block. It starts right away every time, runs great, and idles well. The 5-Speed overdrive transmission greatly enhances the way this Corvette feels, especially on the interstate. The car drives terrifically; it is tight on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, braking to stoplight, shifting though all the gears. and going through some curves. Please note that there are no strange noises or vibrations and the car performs quite well overall. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. It runs cool and does not overheat; the car has a very expensive Griffin aluminum radiator. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other, please keep in mind that these are factory manual brakes so they take more pedal pressure than a modern car. The transmission shifts wonderful; the shifter feels great and it very tight. The clutch feels good and does not slip. Also, the engine compartment is very clean and detailed as one can see in the photos. The horn works as do all the indicators, and exterior lights. The blower for the heater works on all speeds. All of the gauges work the obvious exception of the clock. The entire vacuum system for the headlights and wiper door works correctly from both their respective switches on the dash and the override switches. The entire operation from both switches can be viewed in the video below. There is a slight hesitation the could be tuned out of the carb. The dash lights work as one can see in the video. Most of the fiber optics work. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the 5-Speed transmission, massive power from the big block, and the top down on a beautiful day.
A note on the fiber optic light monitoring system. We consistently receive many questions about the purpose of this system; exactly what it is and what it does. The sole and main idea behind the fiber optic light monitoring system is to simply confirm that all of the exterior lights, headlights, indicators, tail lights, etc., are working and to make the driver aware of a a burned out bulb. Each lamp on the outside of the car has an actual fiber optic cable the runs to an indicator on the center console. There are nine small indicators on the console and each has its own finer optic cable. When the bulb goes on the light travels through the fiber optic cable and illuminates the corresponding indicator on the console. If someone does not remember to plug the cable end into the lamp housing, does any work to the center console, or if there is a break in a connection or anywhere along the cable, that indicator no longer works. As one can image, over time this is very common.
Overall Condition: Overall, this 1970 Corvette is in spectacular condition. This car is well restored with a built 454ci big block engine. There is no way a similar Corvette could be restored or duplicated with this level of quality for anything near our asking price. In my opinion and based on our experience the Chrome Bumper cars from 1968-1972 are the most collectible and hottest in the entire Corvette market right now and 1970 is by far the most rare. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector. The high build quality and stunning condition make this Corvette especially important and difficult to match. It is very apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort. 62,685 miles from the odometer. Color codes from the trim plate. Assembly date is F27. BiN $34,900. December 17, 2015.
