ONLY 195 MILES SINCE RESTORATION COMPLETE.
I found this car 5 plus years ago through a friend. It was a running car but was in
need of a restoration. I purchased this car with restoration in mind since it is a
COMPLETELY NUMBERS MATCHING engine, chassis, trans etc car. These types
are very difficult to find and I thought this was worth the time and money. I have
a complete picture history of the restoration as well as more receipts and documentation
than youd ever want.
Heres the story of the build;
FRAME: The car was completely disassembled down to the frame. The frame was
inspected by a local body shop and found to be clean and without any type of
issues. It was cleaned and painted using Eastwood company chassis black paint.
BODY MOUNTS AND UNDERCARRIAGE: ALL the rubber body mounts and mounting
points were replaced with new factory pieces. The floors(which were actually steel
in 76 were cut out and replaced with new….not just pieced together but all new floors
welded in place not pop riveted.
SUSPENSION: The entire car front and rear has a brand new factory suspension
parts with one exception. The one trailing arm was in great shape so I had the
entire unit rebuilt for as much authenticity as I could get with this restoration. The
car RUNS DOWN THE ROAD AS STRAIGHT AS AN ARROW AND QUIET.
PAINT: I believe the paint is one of the greatest features of this car. Let me tell
you the story. It was done by a local guy who only does classics. The entire car
was stripped, inspected for any issues that fiberglass cars are known to have.
The car was regelcoated with a HAND sanding between each application. Then the
primer with a sanding between coats and then the top coat blue with 4 coats of
clear. The paint is simply BEAUTIFUL. I had this artist document his time and he
has documented 247 hours of hand sanding on this car. To say that it is straight
and true is an understatement. We also replaced all the tail lights, side markers,
etc which sets off the paint even more.
ENGINE: The original motor was completely balanced, blueprinted, and rebuilt by
a local professional engine builder with a great reputation. IT WAS NOT MODIFIED
IN ANY WAY but is bone stock. It runs great and purrs like a kitten. EVERY
COMPONENT in the engine was either replaced or if it had a factory number and
could be rebuilt that’s what I did. The pictures don’t do it justice…..it s a show stopper.
WIRING: This is an area where a lot of restorations get cheap, NOT THIS ONE.
ALL of the wiring harnesses are BRAND NEW MHM factory correct harnesses.
There are no electrical issues with the car and it was worth the almost $2,000
extra to have the new harnesses.
BRAKES: ALL NEW parts from Lone STAR brakes in Texas, a world renowned
Corvette brakes parts supplier.
INTERIOR: The interior needless to say is all brand new. I started with rust
preventing paint on all the metal surfaces from Eastwood followed by DYNAMAT
over the entire floor surface. I have been in a lot of C3 Corvettes in my life and
this is FAR AND AWAY the most quiet and cool of the bunch. The seats are LEATHER
from AL Knoch, not that cheap imitation vinyl crap. The only thing that is not new
are some of the interior panel covers that were original and in good shape that I
have had redyed. I did this because some of the aftermarket parts that you buy
just simply do not fit like factory parts. ALL new interior Chrome as well.
Guages: All the gauges have been professionally rebuilt by Rogers Clocks.
STEERING WHEEL: This is one of only a couple things that are not stock. If you
know this year Corvette they had an awful “chevy monza” steering wheel. I have
replaced that with a color keyed to the interior leather wrapped stock wheel. I
have the original wheel and it comes with the car in case you’d ever want to get
this car judged.
WHEELS: This is the other thing that’s not exactly stock. The car came with
regular chevy wheels with trim rings etc. I have those wheels and trim rings and
they come with the car. I decided to add nice stock but chrome plated wheels….as
you look at the picture I think you will agree it was a good choice.
A/C Converted to R134….charged and tested by a local shop and works great.
TOO MUCH ELSE TO MENTION: For just a taste…every bushing, weatherstrip, seal
or anything like that is replaced. All the brake lines fuel lines, hoses, etc etc have
been replaced with numbered GM hoses. When the car was complete I took it to a
local shop who deals with classics and ask them to go over it top to bottom…retighten
all the bolts, align the front end, inspect it, etc etc...
Please note. The car was stored in a climate controlled garage for the winter.
Also please not that if you are coming to look at this with a microscope you will
find the occasional imperfections from the testing and driving of the car to work
out the issues that inevitably come with a restoration as in comes to completion so
please be realistic.
