Daytona Yellow, Black Interior, 69k Miles Showing, Body-On Restored, Factory and Dealer Documentation, NCRS Award, Numbers matching 350/350 hp V8, Factory Air Conditioning, 4 Speed Manual Transmission, Power Steering, Power Brakes (added), Power Windows, 3.55 Posi Rear, Tilt/telescopic Steering Wheel, Black Soft Top, AM/FM Stereo Radio, Leather (added), Shoulder Belts (added), Headrests (added). A collectible car equivalent of the real estate industrys mantra location, location, location is options, options, options. As you can see by the list above, this fine 69 Corvette convertible is loaded up with all the options that make it desirable. Key to its status as an investment grade collectible, the car is authenticated with its original tank sheet, Protect-o-plate, Chevys statement of origin, first title assignment and the State of Missouris DMV certificate of origin. These documents assure prospective bidders that this cars many options were sourced from the factory, and not added over the ensuing years--with some exceptions for safety, luxury and comfort. The collectible car market has always shown preference to examples with a lot of optional equipment, which is why Corvette Mike is so pleased to offer this example in correct Daytona Yellow.
This car was bought new by a St. Louis resident from Rauscher Chevrolet of Kirkwood, Missouri. With 69,000 miles on the odometer, this restored C3 generation Corvette features many matching numbers parts. This car has been proudly owned by the same gentleman since 1991. It was restored by him over an 18 year period. The paint was stripped to the glass and the current paint on it is better than stock. The motor has been rebuilt and all aspects of the cars operation have been tended to by its meticulous owner. In assessing its overall condition, wed characterize it as a Sunday driver, although it has been restored with NCRS judging in mind. It earned a 2nd Flight award in 2010 and has been corrected since, so the new owner should rightfully campaign it through the National Corvette Restorers Society judging procedures, toward a Top Flight award, which would increase its value. Generally, this convertible has been very well cared for by a responsible adult who treasures his cars. The tank sticker (these are often tough to read as the paper often deteriorates with age), off the gas tank and in a protective envelope, lists the cars original options as follows:
984 Daytona yellow N/C
ZQ4 Standard black interior N/C
L46 350 HP Turbo-jet V8 131.65

Exterior: Taken down to bare glass during restoration, the paint on this car was applied to appear better than they applied it back in 69. This smooth and shiny appearance makes for head-turning results. The chrome and trim are sharp, as they should be on a well-cared for example, the trim showing slight darkening that comes with moderate age. Gaps and door fit are good, the doors shutting securely. The 68 date coded rally wheels are in very good shape. Glass is dated Dec. 68 or Jan. 69.
Interior: The interior shows some evidence of wear, as befits a car that has been driven occasionally. The seats, now leather, are in fine shape. Carpets are very good as well, close to excellent. Gauges and dash are in very good form, reflecting light use over many years. All gauges work.
Engine Bay: The engine bay was restored to emulate the factory look, and includes the rare brackets associated with factory A/C. It looks like an original engine bay would have perhaps a few years after rolling out of the dealers showroom, which is to say, correct and not over-restored. Indeed, this Corvette earned an NCRS award. The rebuilt engine runs smoothly, with matching numbers on the block: HX engine pad suffix (350 hp, manual trans, AC); correct casting #3932386, code dated K228 (Nov. 22, 68). Other engine bay numbers are as follows: carb #29207DA, 0099 (Jan. 9); cylinder heads, left and right #3927186, A239 (Jan. 23) and J18 (Oct. 1, 68); intake manifold #3927184, B18 (Feb. 18); exhaust manifolds #3872765, A16 (Jan.16) and B7 (Feb. 7); A/C compressor #G555302, A179 (Jan. 17); smog pump #7801149, 01091S (Jan. 10); water pump #3782608, A21 (Jan. 21); alternator #1100825, 9A13 (Jan. 13); starter #1108338, 9A16 (Jan. 16); master cylinder #5480346, A21 (Jan. 21); distributor #1111493, 9B3 (Feb. 3).
Chassis: The design features Corvettes renowned fully independent suspension, front and rear, introduced in the 63 model year. The chassis on this car reflects careful ownership over the years. According to the owner, the work underneath features new bushings, springs, shocks, dust covers, rotors and such when the undercarriage was redone. Looks good and is very clean. Frame has been covered with P-04 rust preventative. Frame is great.
Numbers underneath are as follows: Transmission #P9B10A (Feb. 10, 1969), 19S716976 (matches VIN); Rear axle #2AN21469W (3.55, Feb. 14).
Other parts numbers: Jack dated 9B (Feb. 9); Wheels dated K129 20AZ (8 inch rims, July 10, 68).
Drivability: This 69 starts, idles, runs and stops as it should, displaying no adverse behavior over the road. With 3.55 middle ratio rear gears, it has plenty of scoot yet doesnt rev too high on the freeway. In short, the car is dialed in, handling the bumps with radial tires much better than old school bias plies ever could. Stock compression in the L46 motor was 11:1 but this cars motor was dialed back to 10:1 when rebuilt, to make it more tractable using todays lower 91 octane pump gas. This car is prepped for todays driving conditions, shifting crisply and braking with authority.
History: The third generation (C3) of Chevrolet divisions Corvette, which commenced with the 1968 model year, was performance oriented through the 1971 model year. Afterwards, emission controls effectively limited horsepower output. Thus, the 69 model had some strong engines on offer, including the 350 hp solid lifter model L46, as in this car. It is also well-known that the 69 model was better built than the 68, which suffered from some first model year quality control issues.
Production numbers were very robust for the 69 model year, with a then record 38,762 built. The Corvette was by then well-established as Americas premier sports car, a title it holds to this day. Given GMs hard-earned confidence in the brand, Chevy offered a wide range of options for 69. Thus, 69 Corvettes have found use as everything from road course racers (a 69 vette won the GT Class at the Daytona Continental), to drag-strip demons to secretaries cruisers with a tame V8 mated to an automatic transmission with air conditioning. In any guise, they are much fun to drive and of course heads turn wherever a fine classic Corvette rumbles by.
Did you know that GM has built 100 million small block V8s since 1955? Isnt that incredible? The venerable 350 cubic-inch engine was introduced in the 69 model year, based on its 283 and 327 cube predecessors. With a bore of 4 inches and stroke of 3.48 inches, the L46 has a redline of 5,600 rpm. The M20 transmission is the wide ratio M20, as befits a street car with luxury appointments. It is still operating well, never requiring a rebuild. This fun and rare 69 is on exclusive consignment with Corvette Mike. As a high option convertible with several pieces of original paperwork, it belongs in a true Corvette enthusiasts garage. 89,767 miles from the odometre. April 4, 2012.
