Car history: |
You are looking at a 1981 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe with low miles. This car is an 84,000 original mile survivor and is one of the cleaner classic cars we have had for sale. The condition is very nice for the age and aside from a repaint/color change, it is pretty much as stock as you will find, but did have a collision in 1990. This came from an Illinois owner that had this car for a long time. It is also registered with the L81 Corvette Registry and an early Bowling Green KY car.
Mechanically, this car runs surprisingly well aside from a slight bit of lifter tick at times. It shifts through the gears well, and did have a tuneup done recently that includes plugs, wires, cap, rotor and other small components. The brakes seem a bit soft and should be looked at before driving the car a long distance. We also have not tested much of the electronics but what we tested did work. The lights all work on the outside and even the interior courtesy lights still work. It is also a highly optioned car with everything from deluxe interior to tilt wheel, cruise, power mirrors and antenna, and we believe the Gymkhana suspension, air conditioning, light sentry and other options. The t-tops are also in great shape aside from the plastic trim in spots. The glass is also good with no cracks. The rear view mirror is included and needs to be cemented back to the windshield. There is a spare tire and extra parts not currently on the car, including the 1981 correct AM/FM Cass with the factory Delco Equalizer shown in the photos.
Note this car was in a collision in 1990 according to Carfax and at one point did have a rebuilt title. When transferred into Wisconsin the title was not rebranded due to a DMV error. While we would not know by looking at the fit and finish, this car did have a major collision years ago like many older Corvettes. Being it is a newer model (1981), the damage is tracked by Carfax including the rebuilt title. The good news is this car is rust free and the frame and birdcage are beautiful. We have no way to gauge the full extent of the damage from years ago, but want to make it clear in the auction. In addition, we would rather have a rebuilt title on a rust free chassis than dealing with all kinds of rot and rust on most of these cars.
The paint is better than driver quality and still shines, but has been touched up in spots. We are amazed that the car and interior really show well, especially for the age. We also did validate that the block is numbers matching as most other components are, and does have the VIN stamped on it.
We have no easy way to validate the mileage due to age but it appears to be correct based on the condition of other components. Wisconsin looks at the car as exempt from odometer disclose due to age. Just to recap, cosmetically, the paint does have it's flaws as documented by the photos. We would leave the car as it is and enjoy it. However, it could easily be restored to new if desired as they reproduce everything for this car.
Current prices in the United States range from $3,000 for basket cases to upwards of $25,000 for nicely restored examples. Consider the value of these down the road better than the stock market. This would make a great addition for the Corvette enthusiast that has everything, Best of all, there is a reasonable $4450 reserve.
Just to be clear - this car should be considered a project due to age. It has had collision issues in the distant past. You are buying this car as a project and should be trailered due to age. It should be gone through before attempting to drive it any distance. We also recommend and encourage inspections which are at the cost of the buyer.
If you have questions about the car or shipping during the auction, we can be reached at 262-798-0600 and ask for Mike or Nichole.
