Car history: |
1969 Tri-Power L68 (400 Hp) LeMans Blue coupe - 1 of 2,072 produced in 1969. The car was configured from the factory with very few options, it seems alot of the 400 HP coupes were equipped not stripped, the person who originally ordered this car wanted it to be as light as possible for the best performance. The options on this car are: L68 - 400 HP Tri-Power engine option, A01 - Soft Ray Tinted Glass, M21 - Close Ratio 4-Speed, G81 - 3.70 Ratio/Posi-traction rear-end, U69 - AM/FM Radio. This car still has the original "born-with" cylinder case, the rear-end is original and the transmission has been replaced. Since I have had the car I have freshened up the engine (new rings, bearings, timing chain), re-building the heads and putting in hardened exhaust seats for compatibility with today's unleaded fuel. The car has new belts (correct replacement belts with debossed P/N's from Quanta were used) and correct replacement hoses. The cars previous owner added a Lunati roller camshaft P/N 50247, the cam works great on the street, with a nice idle and great power characteristics. I purchased a complete, restored smog system from Bill Hodel and had it installed on the car. The brakes are completely new including the master cylinder, I have the original parts in boxes that will go with the car. The car currently has side exhaust which is not original to the car, I located and installed original low mileage Walker (GM) side pipes to have the correct sound. The car has a replacement DeWitts aluminum radiator and the water pump has been rebuilt and a new clutch fan has been installed. The car runs great and does not overheat. The interior has new carpeting, center console units, door and seat covers and I had the clock re-built so it works as original. All instruments work, the vacuum system has been gone thru and the wiper door and headlights function properly. The carburetors have been professionally re-built and re-plated and look great, the car starts right up and runs right. I recently drove the car to an NCRS meet in Lake Tahoe, and the car ran great. The frame on the car is in great shape with little to no surface rust, from what I can trace of the cars history, it has spent most of its time in Arizona, Texas and California. I have included one picture of an original marking on the underside of the car, the job number is also in great shape and you can readily make out the VIN on the frame which matches the VIN of the car. The numbers on the car are as follows: The car was built September 24, 1968 (B24). Block: 3955270 - Cast date - I 4 8 (Sept. 4, 1968). Engine Build Date: T0913 (Sept. 13, 1968) Suffix code LQ: Code for L68 with a 4-speed transmission, 3 X 2 BBL, non TI (K66) car Heads: 3931063 - Casting dates - G 5 8/ G 8 8 (July 5/8, 1968) Intake Manifold: Part Number - 3937795, the manifold is in great shape with no cracks and the Winters logo and P/N show very nicely. Starter: Replacement Starter currently on the car - I have an original GM OEM 1108 400 starter rebuilt by John Pirkle in a box that will go with the car if desired for judging purposes. Distributor: 1111926 (Could not read the date on the tag) Alternator: 1100833 - 8 J 4 (Sept. 4, 1968) Carburetors: Center Carb is for a 1968 Number 3925517-EV List 4055 Date 8 5 3 (3rd week of May 1968) F/R Carbs are correct dates for the car: 3902953 List 3659 Dates 8 7 3 (3rd Week of July 1968) and 8 8 1 (1st week of Aug. 1968) Water Pump: 3858284 - I 3 8 (Sept. 3, 1968) Transmission: P9P03B (Sept. 3, 1969) with no VIN stamping - Which indicates that this transmission was not in another car and was most likely a warranty replacement transmission. (I have included a picture of the pad on the side of the transmission). Rear-End: 2 FA 9 12 68 W (Sept. 12, 1968) - FA is the code for the Heavy Duty BB 3.70 rear-end. This car is in great shape, but there are a few things that need attention that I have not got around to completing. The molding on the wiper door was bent when I purchased the car, I had it straightened and it is ready for final refinishing. The car did not have the original radio in it when I purchased it, so I located and had installed a re-built unit, speakers have not been installed, so I do not know if the radio functions. The tires are older and should be replaced and the car does not have a spare tire with it. There are the usual paint chips on the car from driving it. When I purchased the car it had a Hurst shifter in it, I replaced it with a factory original shifter from a 1969 Corvette. I am sure when the shifter was replaced the reverse light switch was discarded so the car does need to have a new one installed. 106,391 miles from the odometer. Colors from the trim plate. Built date is B24. Motor suffix code is T0913LQ. June 30, 2009. |
