Car history:
This is a 1968 Corvette CHASSIS. The California title is CLEAR, and the title does not indicate 'salvage. The VIN on the title is 1943785422000, which I believe is for a convertible. The left frame rail has what appears to be 3(?)22000 stamped on it, so the frame and title match. The title was last issued on 2/10/94. The story is as follows:
I was told the title/chassis is for a 1968 427 M21 4 speed convertible. I do not know the details of how the complete car changed to its current form. I do know by the records that I received that the chassis has since changed hands at least twice. Ultimately it ended up here in Nebraska. Somewhere along the line, the frame rails were professionally shortened 8 (Eight) inches - the final 2 pictures are the left and right frame welds - the welds appear to be 'Z' type welds. The center of the front spindle to the center of the rear spindle is at 90 inches with the wheels mounted, and the previous owner stated the wheel base is 90 (Ninety) inches. The plan was to place a shelby Cobra style reproduction body on this chassis and install an Ford Fe 428 big block with a top loader 4 speed. The owner I purchased this chassis from lost interest in completing the project when he moved. He sold off the shelby Cobra reproduction parts he had been saving, and I bought what you see here. I had plans on selling the rear end/differential assembly/etc. I didn't know a clear title was included when I negotiated the price - so instead of parting out the pieces, I decided to offer the chassis/title as a unit, for a builder to use for a project. It could be used for a street rod. I researched Cobra kit cars on line, and it appears all the pieces needed are available. The Cobra kit front bumper brace is mounted, and the rear bumper brace is shown in one of the photos (it is laying on the ground at the rear of the chassis). Please study the photos. The front frame brace/radiator support, driveshaft, and rear brake calipers are shown in a seperate photo, but will come with the chassis. The motor mounts were removed (as in cut off), as well as 2 metal areas inside adjacent to the frame in front of the rear shocks (see photos). The body mounts look very good. The cast iron deep V power steering pulley matches the number for a 68 Corvette 427. A fabricated aluminum engine mounting plate visible in the photo. The lower part of the differential is stamped: AW W28E2 (my references show this is a Heavy-Duty Posi 3.08:1 for the 427, and the date may be May 2, 1968 (which appears to be correct date for the VIN). I was told by an Omaha Nebraska auto shop owner, that the frame and components look to be free of any significant rust, and would be consistent with a California vehicle. July 23, 2010.
