The 1971 Corvette changed very little from the previous year, but as this
highly original example from the Don Fezell Collection demonstrates, there was
plenty new going on under the hood and at GM headquarters. After increasing
the 427s displacement to 454 cubic inches for 1970, engineers had developed
the LS7, an iron block, aluminum-head racing engine intended to replace the
L88, but it was abruptly cancelled, the victim of corporate disdain for high-
output engines and the cost-cutting de-proliferation program then burning its
way through redundant RPO option lists. Once again, Zora Arkus-Duntov came
to Corvettes rescue, specifying the new LS6 454 CI V-8 as the top offering for
1971. With 9.0:1 compression, the LS6 walked the line between the need to
meet new fuel and emissions requirements and the insistent demand for power
levels unique to Corvette, which it delivered to the tune of 425 HP and 475 lb-ft
of torque. While the LS6 Corvette delivered the goods, rising fuel and insurance
prices and the added production cost of its aluminum cylinder heads kept all but
200 brave souls from owning one (including 12 factory-racing ZR2 versions),
putting these cars on par with the L88 for rarity. Purchased new at Grabiak
Chevrolet in New Alexandria, Pennsylvania, by James Benninger of nearby St.
Marys, this highly optioned 1971 Corvette LS6 coupe was delivered with Steel
Cities Gray paint and a black Custom leather interior, its 454/425 HP big-block
V-8 backed by a 4-speed manual transmission and 3.55:1 Positraction third
member. Its plentiful list of optional equipment included F70-15 Firestone Wide
Oval white-letter tires, power steering and brakes, power windows, tilt steering
column, rear window defroster and AM/FM radio. This is a well-preserved
example driven just 44,932 original miles and with a superb single repaint on
the faultless original body. Documented with the original invoice and owners
manual, it is a beautiful example of the last of the great high-performance big-
block Corvettes.
