Car history: |
Posted 07/31/2018 Mulsane Blue / Blue Interior 84,000 Miles (thought to be original) Original numbers matching Solid Lifter 350 LT-1 Original big valve (2.02 / 1.60) heads Original GM aluminum high rise intake manifold Original Transistorized Ignition Original 4 speed M21 close ratio transmission Original 12 bolt posi-traction differential with 3.70 gears Only 1,949 LT-1s produced in 1971
Unique features: Factory radio-delete (no antenna hole on left rear quarter panel. Only option is power brakes. This non-optioned low weight LT-1 with M21 close ratio seems like it would have been ordered for B production SCAA racing. History: Same owner for 29 years. In the summer of 1996 a slow frame up restoration began and was finished in January 2000. Only 4,000 miles have been driven on the car since 1989. It has always been garaged and has never seen rain. During the three and one half years of restoration, the vision changed from factory original to a mild resto-mod, all with the original matching numbers powertrain.
Restoration Highlights: A Pro-Build was performed by Sghezas Machine Shop in Salinas, CA. Tom Sgheza specialized in Drag Boat Engines and building engines for race teams in NASCAR Winston West series. A Crane Blueprinted GM off- road special cam was installed along with a heavy duty valve spring set and Crower stainless steel roller rockers. The M21 close ratio and rear end were rebuilt by Michael Young of Youngs Speed & Custom in Salinas, CA. All new stainless steel brakes, stainless steel brake lines / hoses and and master cylinder by Vette Brakes were installed and uses a special high performance silicon brake fluid. All the suspension was upgraded to Vette Brakes Comp Plus C4 style set up; fully adjustable front and rear transverse composite springs, special offset tubular front control arms and adjustable Carrera shocks. The wheels are custom made forged billet aluminum CNC machined 2 piece Trans Am Spec by Phil Schmidt of PS Engineering Vintage Wheels. It has a custom staggered set up 17X8s in front and 17X9s in the rear. They are shod with BF Goodrich g-force KD high performance tires, 245/45/ZR17s up front and 275/45/17s in the rear. The paint and body was the most extensive. The original paint was stripped down to the original gel coat. Then all the tiny surface stress cracks were grinded out and feathered in. The gel coat was then resealed. A total of 5 primer and block sandings with guide coat were done to make the body perfectly straight. The body prep was done by Gordon Jacopi of Val Strough Paint & Body, who was GM factory trained on composites. The original paint code 976 (Mulsanne Blue) was applied with German Glasso paint in 2 base coats reduced 50 percent by Ted Vo of Val Strough Paint and Body. Then 15 coats of clear, also reduced 50 percent were applied with cutting and buffing every 5 coats. It still looks as good when it came out of the shop not a scratch or chip in the paint. All the chrome bumpers were re-plated at Faith Chrome in San Jose, CA. |
