Nothing beats purpose-built performance, especially in the realm of sports cars. In 2014, with the introduction of Chevrolet's seventh generation Corvette and subsequent resurrection of the Stingray moniker, third generation Vettes accelerated their ascent in to serious collector car territory. And this year, with the reintroduction of the awesome Grand Sport, the legacy of niche Corvette performance continues to be seeded in a rock-solid foundation. 1 of only 57 C3 convertibles equipped with a top-option LT-1 and factory air conditioning, and 1 of only 5 of those convertibles decked in Mille Miglia Red, this highly optioned, numbers-matching drop-top is the quintessential blue chip C3. And if you're looking to grab an investment grade, Top Flight Stingray before the market really ticks up, it's a perfect candidate for your next classic!
BODYWORK/TRIM: Assembled at GM's storied St. Louis manufacturing facility, and body-off restored in late 2009, this awesome C3 has been bathed in correct GM code 973 Mille Miglia base and sealed in glossy clear. The foundation for that highly exclusive pigment is a solid fiberglass body that presents a better-than-factory appearance and, by the looks of things, has never been seriously damaged or received any major modifications. That composite is detailed in correct trim, correct, optional tinted glass and a fresh Black top. And today, this clean Chevy rolls as one high quality, well-maintained classic that's great to drive and fun to look at!
ENGINE: Tilt the car's hood and you'll find an original, 350 cubic inch LT-1 V8 that hangs a correct 3970010 casting number behind a correct CKY assembly stamp and matching partial VIN. At the top of the Chevy Orange mill, a correct 6239 Holley rides between a polished air cleaner and bright, stainless fluid lines. Below that carb, a familiar Winters intake funnels a perfect air/fuel mixture in to beefy, cast iron heads, which wear finned Corvette valve covers. When the juice hits the cylinders, a correct transistor ignition system sparks fresh, stainless-sleeved wires while a solid lifter rotating assembly pushes spent gases through cast iron exhaust manifolds. Charge comes courtesy of a correct GM alternator, which spins opposite a correct smog pump and old school Frigidaire AC compressor. Cooling is provided by a beefy radiator, which rides in front of pliable GM hoses and correct tower clamps. And overall, this Chevy's tidy engine compartment is exceptionally well done; framing items like a factory expansion tank and fresh brake booster in clean, Satin Black fenders.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION: Peer under this low-slung roadster and you'll find a restored chassis that's straight, solid and correct. The car's original small block twists torque through a correct Muncie 4-speed, branded with a familiar 3925661 casting number, which makes good use of a '69-model differential. Beneath that drivetrain, a fully rebuilt suspension combines optional power steering with tight turns and increased grip. In the middle of the car, an aluminized, true-dual exhaust system pipes spent gases through rear-mounted mufflers and polished stainless tips. At the corners of the car, power-assisted discs ensure quick, drama-free stops. And all that fully sorted hardware rolls on handsome Rally Wheels, which spin F70-15 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around dent-free trim rings and turbine center caps.
INTERIOR: Open this Corvette's sculpted doors and you'll find a correct Black interior that appears to have been completely replaced during the car's extensive restoration. At the center of that cockpit, fresh bucket seats suspend tight leather covers over correct lap belts. Between those seats, an angled console centers a traditional chrome shifter amid clean, cross-flag-branded floor mats. Opposite that console, wood-trimmed side panels, backed by factory power windows, point stainless handles at the base of a crack-free dash. That dash frames fully rebuilt telemetry, factory air conditioning and an optional Delco-GM AM/FM radio. And the driver traces the road with a satin-spoke steering wheel, which laps an optional tilting column.

1) According to the owner, this baby received a total frame off restoration, including a professional repaint and fender flares (in the late 1990s-early 2000s). Look at hershes gorgeous! The engine (327 c.i. with 350 heads) was rebuilt and blue-printed about 4 years ago with all new parts (to GM specs). She even has a fitted cover to protect her! She has also been featured in the following publications: Hot Rod, Cruisin Times, Plain Dealer.
Paint: The current owner purchased this car pretty much as you see it, about 5 years ago. It was professionally painted by Poppo, a gentleman who does a lot of corvette restorations (see a copy of the newspaper clip in the additional photos below). It was painted with clear coat GM Millennium Yellow and a black stripe. Without question, it was a very professional repaint. It is extremely smooth, shiny, and matches well all the way around. We see no deviation in the coloring of the panels. It is mostly free of any orange peel effect, and we did not notice any defects in the workmanship itself. The only noticeable nicks are a few in front of the rear wheels. There are some brush-touch-ups on the right door. Upon very close inspection, we see one little nick by the left head light cover, and a very small thin spot on the left side of the convertible top cover (and this is being extremely critical). Overall, it is really a beautiful paint job, and is in extremely nice condition.
Body: The body is very straight and just beautifully done. It resembles the type of straightness and correctness you would expect to see from the factory. The car received extended wheel openings, which are also beautifully done. The body fits seem to be in very good shape and very well done. We noticed that the doors shut well and do not drop when you open them, so it looks like the hinges and mechanisms are in good shape. We looked over the body, we noticed the left head light cover could be repositioned slightly to the left. We also looked closely for stress cracks. Being very critical, the only spots we noticed were two very fine 1 cracks on the front end, where the front edges of the hood meet the body. This is very common (and they are hardly noticeable). The left headlight opening also has 2 minor cracks. These areas are very minimal and very minor, especially compared to a lot of other Corvettes.
Chrome/Bright Work: The chrome on this car is in very nice condition and show very little wear. The front and rear emblems are in good condition. The red and black on the rear is slightly faded, but it is very easy to replace. The stainless around the front windshield is in great shape without any noticeable damage. The molding between the wipers (on the back edge of the wiper door and the edges of the fender) has been cleaned off, shined, and had the paint removed. It shows no damage except for a tiny, almost unnoticeable dimple on the right side. At around 3ft away, you can see a little bit of light pitting starting on the bezel around the plate.
Glass: The owner thinks the glass may be original. The front is labeled Softray and both sides say Astro-ventilation and Soft Ray. The glass appears to be in nice condition, except there are 3-4 light 1-2 scratches on the side windows. We do not see any delamination, discoloration, bulls-eyes, or cracks. The front windshield has no noticeable wiper scratches; just maybe a few pinhead size nicks from normal driving. The rear plastic window looks very clear.
Top: The manual convertible top looks extremely fresh. It has a dark black, rich color and does not show bad exposure to the sun. It looks like the top on a year old car. All of the stitching and beading looks almost new. We operated the top (up and down) and all of the front latches work well. The hold down latches work fine, as well as the cover latches. The right rear cable latch might need adjusted a bit to work more smoothly. Interior: The interior appears to be styled similar to original (or close to it), and is a deep, rich black color. The seats are vinyl and in nice condition. They are still supple and show little wear. There is a light little scratch/imperfection on the passenger side. All of the frame work inside the top is painted black, and looks nice with just a little wear. There are 2 pinch marks where the top goes down. The visors look good. The stitching is in place, but the interior support shows a little age. The door panels look very nice without any tears. The left side needs a little clip to hold it tight. The carpet has a nice dark black color without any substantial fading. It has lots of wear left, and a little scrubbing and vacuuming would help it look almost new. The dash looks good, with no apparent cracking or splitting from sun damage. There is a little wear on the paint around the setting for the clock (look.the clock is running!). Inside, you will see a tilt telescopic steering wheel, AM/FM stereo with cassette player, Hurst shifter, console, 2 speakers in the storage compartment behind the driver and passenger, and an additional arm rest.
Tires and Wheels: All 4 tires look fairly fresh, and are BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. The fronts are size P235 / 60 R15, and have about 7/32 tread. The rears are P255 / 60 R15, and have about 4/32 tread. We did not notice any cracking, or curb damage on the tires. The wheels are 15x12 Alloy Turbine poke wheels. They look nice and have a good finish. Both fronts have light curb damage.
Engine compartment: Under the hood, everything looks very neat, clean, and orderly. You can see the attention to chrome with the radiator supports, alternator, master brake cover, and the additional cover at the back (on top of the distributor). It also has a Mallory ignition, chrome valve covers with high performance Mallory wires, Hooker headers, and braided upper radiator hose covering. We did notice the A/C compressor may be a newer style than this car originally came with.
Chassis: We tried to inspect the area in front of the rear tires (where the frame traditionally tends to rust in areas), but it looks like it has been reinforced from the boxed corner up over tire. Mechanical: According to owner, this car rides like a true Corvette. The brakes are stock 4 wheel caliper, disc, hydraulic brakes. They are vacu powered with eleven rotors and a 693 sq in dual master cylinder. The owner says it does stop properly, and that it runs very strong.
Equipment: 327 c.i./350 heads, Weiand stealth manifold, 650 Holley carb, Comp high performance cam, 4 speed Muncie, Hooker headers (ceramic coated), Posi-traction 3.55, Mallory high performance ignition, K&N air filter, Exhaust 2.5 chambered pipes with collectives 3, Power windows, Power brakes, Tilt and telescope wheel, Factory A/C, Am/FM cassette stereo, Lots of chrome under hood. 92,037 miles. Colors from the trim plate. October 29, 2008
