Car history:
The original #49 Greenwood car was delivered new as a factory L88 Corvette before becoming one of three Stars & Stripes team cars sponsored by BF Goodrich (BFG) during the 1971-1973 seasons. Numbered #49, they were initially slated for promotional use by BFG, although quickly converted to racing specification and powered by one of the last Traco-built ZL-1 motors. Driven by top road course drivers of the period, including John Greenwood, Bob Johnson, Dick Smothers and Don Yenko, its initial major win was a first place in the GT class in 1972 at the Watkins Glen six-hour race. In 1973, the #49 Stars & Stripes BFG team car raced in the trifecta of FIA events: the 12 Hours of Sebring, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it set the GT speed record of 215 mph on the Mulsanne straight in qualifying. The BF Goodrich L88/ZL1 Greenwood race car may just be the most significant and storied of all the L88s that came from General Motors in those three years and its accomplishments in both racing and show awards are indisputable. This 1969 Corvette is listed as a greenwood ZL-1, L-88 clone as there is no documentation. The car appears to have the characteristics of a ZL-1 or L-88. RPO: M-22 4 speed H.D. transmission close ratio, GS4 Posi trac axle 370 ratio, J50/J56 Brakes, H.D. Power, UA6 Alarm system, N14 Exhaust system side mounted, K66 ignition system, full transistor available only with optional engine, TJ2 louver trim, front fender, F41 Special purpose front and rear/ including special spring, special shock absorber, front and rear sway bars, PT7 white stripe nylon tires, F70/15 2 ply, A01 Tinted glass. Included with sale as over the counter performance option off road. Aluminum headlight bucket. Part number 3961463 (L) and 1464 (R). Fender flare on car Part number 3958683 (L) and 8684 (R). This car was said to have had a all aluminum 427 engine in it in the early 70's. The aluminum block is now long gone. It still has the GM snow flake aluminum 074 L88/ZL1 heads on it. Appears to be correct matching number transmission as well as differential. Also appears to be F 41 suspension, looks like 69 on rear shocks (see pictures). There is a old photo of the car showing the flares on it long ago, it was still in the original solid 972 can am white then. The stars and stripes were added later and the paint looks incredible! No chips or cracks. There is a photo showing the drivers door jamb that still retains the original paint and sticker. Original T-3 headlights are still in place and are in working order. The original 421 SL seats are in good survivor condition. Car was also said to have a original 32k miles on it. The undercarriage is unrestored and has no rust. This Greenwood L-88/Zl-1 Clone is a beautiful example that commands attention weather driven on the street or having a lot of fun at autocross/Sebring. 468 cubic inches on stand by ready to go! Engine sounds amazing! BiN $137,500 with Viper. December 7, 2015.
