Car history: |
1968 Corvette Coupe that we have owned for more than 25 years. The car was originally orange with tobbaco interior, a 300hp 327cid engine, TH-400, a/c, power steering and t-tops. It was stripped and painted in about 1985. As I recall, when the car was stripped, an old repair was seen on the right front fender and on the right rear fender edge. No other repairs were visible. The paint is now very faded and over the past ten years has developed cracks throughout. It should be stripped and repainted. All bumpers and chrome are original and show wear. The car was stored and not touched from 1985 until 1997 when we decided to begin a restoration. The odometer is inoperable and reads about 66,000 miles. The car had about 55,000 miles on it when purchased and the current shown mileage is probably very close. The body was removed and the frame and complete suspension were rebuilt with GM parts. This includes the complete drivetrain. While their had been no breakdowns, we wanted to be able to drive the car anywhere. The transmission, driveline, trailing arms, and all suspension components were rebuilt by GM techs. New fuel tank, fuel lines, S/S brake calipers, brake lines, aluminized exhaust, rear leaf and front coil springs, and radiator are among some of the new parts. The original engine was placed in storage and a new 330hp, 350 cid aluminum head GM crate engine was installed. The vacuum operated headlights recieved a rebuild with new canisters and work as they should. A replacement corvette stereo from Ecklers has been installed. The clock and fuel guage do not work. The speedometer, oil pressure, temperature and tachometer work fine. A new sending unit was installed with the new fuel tank so I think the guage probably needs rebuilding. The drivers window does not roll up and down very well. The passenger side works fine and each are original glass. The t-tops leak and probably need new weather stripping. We do not allow the car to be rained upon. The car starts and runs very well, the car shifts smoothly and drives straight as it should since it probably has less than 500 miles on the rebuild. While many new parts have been installed on the a/c, it has a slow refrigerant leak and is not presently working. The door panels are original and have numerous cracks. This car will make a very nice and dependable driver. With the exception of the engine replacement, we have tried to keep the car original. The original 327 numbers matching block has never been rebuilt and/or bored out and goes with the car. 66,313 miles from the odometer. Colors from the owner. February 3, 2009. |
