Car history:
1970 Chevrolet Corvette coupe with numbers matching engine 350/300hp. Recent Muncie M20 4-speed conversion with all OEM or equivalent parts. Power steering, power brakes, lights and wipers work properly. All suspension and brakes rebuilt, engine rebuilt with 9.25:1 +.030" pistons and hardened valve seats. Runs strong on 87 octane gas with no overheating on the hottest summer days. Pertronix ignition with all original chrome shielding in place and in good condition. Mechanically great, front and rear suspension have all been disassembled, sandblasted, repainted and rebuilt with new urethane bushings and new Timken trailing arm bearings. Recent new windshield, upper dash pad, and reupholstered seats w/ new foam. Clean, frame and birdcage. Repainted in 2001 with all new seals and weather stripping. To the best of my knowledge I am the third owner, having purchased it from an elderly lady in 1997. The car was in original condition at the time, (with the exception of a Ontario Orange repaint- car was originally green) which was as an automatic-transmission equipped base-model 300HP 350 cu. in. car with 10.25:1 compression ratio. I have done what basically amounts to a rolling restoration on the car, which encompasses the following:
(1) Originally found the rear wheel bearings to be worn, so I completely disassembled the rear suspension, de-scaled and repainted all parts, and
Reassembled the rearend with new urethane bushings and new rear wheel bearings. Did not remove the build sheet but did discover the original, unused spare Goodyear Polyglas tire in the carrier, which is still there.
(2) Brake pedal was going to the floor, so I rebuilt all the calipers with new seals. Eventually wound up replacing the front calipers with rebuilt, sleeved units
(3) Disassembled the front suspension, sandblasted and repainted all parts and pieces, and reassembled it with urethane bushings (OEM ball joints and tie rod ends are still there)
(4) Engine at 10 1/4:1 compression would not run on pump gas without pinging. Solved problem by removing and disassembling, then rebuilding the engine with +.030" KB hypereutectic 9.25:1 compression pistons and having the rotating assembly balanced. Also had hardened exhaust valve seats installed in the heads along with new exhaust valves. Had all the OEM
Ignition shielding sent out for rechroming, which is ALL still there. Most Corvettes from this era have had this shielding removed at some point...also installed a Pertronix electronic conversion to the distributor at this time.
Radiator was disassembled and rodded-out at this time as well.
(5) While all the suspension work was being done I descaled and treated all the accessible frame surfaces. While not pristine the frame IS a good unit.
(6) Five years ago I reupholstered the OEM seats with kits from "Dr. Rebuild" which also included new foam.
(7) Three years ago I replaced the original TH400 automatic trans with a Muncie M20 four-speed sourced from eBay. I rebuilt this unit with new bearings, rollers, synchros, and a new 1-2 slider, and it shifts nicer than any four-speed I have ever driven. The unit was installed with a Hurst Competition Plus shifter, Much better than the frame-mounted OEM unit. I recently topped it off with an OEM black chrome shift ball which with the exception of the missing reverse-lockout handle looks like a stock shifter (Not shown in the pictures).
(8) While the transmission was out I had the cracked OEM windshield replaced with a Pilkington piece from Safelite auto glass, not original but nice and clean and installed correctly with no damage to the expensive stainless trim pieces around the windshield. At this time I was also able to inspect the birdcage which showed a couple small surface rust spots which were then treated and repainted before the new glass was put in. The cars odometer stopped for some reason at 67,000 miles and I would estimate that I have put no more than 2000 miles on it since this occurred. When I purchased it in 1997 it was showing 46,000 miles and after seeing the overall condition of the car as well as the bore condition of the engine when I disassembled it I have no reason to think that this is anything other than original mileage. There are a few minor problems: Temperature gauge seems to work but not very accurately. Ammeter does not seem to be working. Clock does not work. Carpet is old and faded, reasonably presentable but could use replacing. Storage bin frame behind seats is cracked and the doors are getting a little worn. Drivers window drags somewhat when cranking up and down. Lacquer (Daytona Yellow) paint job is now about 10 years old and showing some wear and 'checking', makes a very presentable driver but now show car standard. Rear tires are new, but fronts are down to about 30% left. Front and rear seals have minor leaks (engine now has about 30,000 miles on the rebuild). Looks like the car was hit in the right front at some point, the front bumper and right hand grille are new on that side. The left hand grille shows some pitting and could stand replacing (not cheap).
Strong points are: All new weatherstripping, replaced when I repainted the car. Lights, wipers, and fiber optic lights work perfectly. Strong, solid drivetrain that runs on 87 octane gas. December 21,2009.
