Update 03/22/2012. Pictures added. eBay Motors Seller swampmarine1 Kansas City, MO, United States
Okay folks, what we have here is my 1971 convertible Corvette with 33K documented original miles. The car has a Muncie M-20 four speed manual transmission, power brakes, power steering, black vinyl interior, original black rubber Corvette floor mats, white letter tires, rally wheels, AM/FM Stereo, positraction 3:36 rear end. It has its original numbers matching 350/270 horsepower engine.
The car was built on August 17th, 1970 and was the NINTH Corvette built for the 1971 model year, making it one of the oldest 1971 Corvettes in existence!
The original engine has its correct numbered and dated parts to include: carburetor, starter, alternator, coil, distributor and exhaust manifolds. The transmission and 3:36 ratio rear differential are also original and correct! The numbers matching engine runs perfectly and the transmission shifts effortlessly; the shifter is still in long throw set-up.
No hit Body! The body is painted in original classic white w/original black vinyl interior. According the original owner, the car was repainted in 1973 and still shows very good. There is some checking and it has had some chips, most of which have been touched-up. The original optional hardtop (black vinyl) is in perfect condition and included with the car.
The interior is in excellent original condition with only the carpet where the driver’s feet go being replaced (the rest is original). The original door panels have no cracks or blemishes! The seats have never been recovered and are in very good condition with no tears! The dated seat belts are intact and nice! Also included is the original jack and tools. The original owner stated the outside door handle on the driver’s side was replaced in 1980.
·The center e-brake cover has one hairline crack, but I have a GM NOS replacement, still in the factory box that is included with the sale.
·The original clock is in the dash, but does not work.
·The car retains the original radio speakers which crackle some when the radio is playing. I had planned to remove them and have them rebuilt when I have the clock refurbished; I just never got it done.
·The car retains the original convertible vinyl top which is in very good shape, however, this last winter the rear plastic window spilt in the cold. Because the window is dated 8-70, I have not been able to bring myself to replace it (I have been looking for a company that could replace the rear window with a repro, but maintain the perfect canvas top). The last picture in my gallery shows the rear window as it is now.
When I purchased the car, the following documentation came with it (all in the original owner’s name) which go with the car: original window sticker, Protect-o- Plate, Bill of Sale, loan origination form, Purchaser Acceptance of Motor Vehicle form, Pre-Delivery Service Check Sheet, Consumer Information Booklet, Owner’s Manual and Bag, copy of original title, Memorandum Certificate of Title, the original 1971 Ohio license plates and many Ohio vehicle registrations!
Technically the car is a 3-owner car (counting me). The original owner owed it until 2007 when he decided to sell it (due to his advanced age). He then contracted with a company that specializes in Corvette restoration and sales (Cool Cars). Cool Cars took possession of the car and did a cosmetic prep on the car to prepare it for sale. This included a complete cleaning of the engine compartment and undercarriage. They also replaced the original gas tank and radiator. They upgraded the brakes (stainless steel), installed a new exhaust and correct new reproduction F70-15 white lettered tires. All original parts that were salvageable were retained and used in this process. For whatever reason (I still can’t figure this one out) Cool Cars titled the car in their company name (luckily they made a copy of the original title). So, as I said technically the car is a three owner car; however Cool Cars just “owned” it briefly while they prepped it for sale (I also have a copy of the Cool Cars title). I purchased the car from Cool Cars.
Upon purchasing the car, I made contact with the original owner (I still have his information and correspond with him on occasion). I was able to get the name of the salesman who sold him the car in 1970 and made contact with him also (he now owns the dealership/Reilly Chevrolet-Cadillac).
As I said, I contacted the salesman and he provided me with a letter documenting the sale of this car to the original owner. He said he remembered the sale well for two reasons. The first is because the original owner’s father bought a 1971 Monte Carlo as a package deal with the original owner buying this Corvette. The other reason is because the salesman documented all of his sales throughout his career in a log book. He provided me with a copy of the page from his log that documents this sale (along with the Monte Carlo sale). He also provided me with a picture of the dealership where the sale occurred. Naturally, all of this documentation goes with the car.
Since I purchased the car, the original owner has provided me with his original insurance documents for the car and several pictures he took over the years to include a picture of the day he took delivery on the car.
Also included with the car is all the documentation I have personally accumulated to include the several personal letters from the original owner (to me), personalized Missouri license plates, loan documents, registrations, insurance documents and a detailed listing of all cruises and shows I have participated in. I will also include a cd of the many pictures I have taken of the car since buying it if you are interested.
THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OR WRECKED. THERE IS NO DAMAGE HISTORY, NO VISIBLE INDICATION OF ANY and NO FRAME RUST!
This is an immaculate example of an original convertible Corvette that has not been restored but meticulously maintained. Body panel gaps and alignments are exceptional. Chrome and stainless is outstanding, interior is original and in exceptional condition and the carpets, upholstery, dash, console and door panels are excellent. The car runs and drives beautifully. The undercarriage, including the frame is clean and looks great. Under the hood is detailed and in excellent condition. Enough can’t be said about the outstanding condition of this car.
IMPORTANT ... PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY!!!
As to why I am selling? I currently have three Corvettes and am nearing retirement. I plan to move, downsized substantially and do a lot of traveling. I have decided to keep my 2006 Z06 and sell my other two Vettes; one being this beauty. It was a very hard choice (I have been working on the decision all winter), but circumstances of my looming retirement necessitate I make some difficult choices. That being said, I have no intention of giving the car away, but hope to find a suitable home for her for a reasonable selling price.
Please don’t ask me for my reserve because I will not divulge it. I will say five years ago, I paid substantially more for the car than my reserve is on this auction. Given the economy and the resulting market being what it is, I am not unrealistic about the value of cars such as this one. My reserve has been adjusted accordingly.
The car is available for viewing and I encourage any potential owner to view it before bidding.
As I said, I have owned my Corvette for about 5 years and I have disclosed what I know (which is obviously substantial) about the car to the best of my ability and to the best of my knowledge. The car is 42 years old and sold "as-is." It is stored in my garage located in the Kansas City, MO area. It can either be picked up at or delivered from my location. Any potential buyer will need to arrange (I am willing to assist) the shipping if needed. It is your responsibility to understand exactly what it is you are bidding on. Please notice my feedback rating of 100%. I wish to keep that rating so want to make sure any potential buyer is completely satisfied with any potential transaction.
By winning the bid, you have entered into a binding contract. I require a non- refundable $500 deposit within 48 hours of the auction close. The car must be paid for in full within 7 days of auction close. I will accept cash or a certified cashier’s check. The car will not leave my possession until all funds are confirmed. I would be willing to garage store the car for you for a reasonable amount of time (1-2 months if necessary) IF the car is paid for in full.
The car is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the auction early if I find a buyer locally. I am not interested in any trades.
Update: Due to the many questions I have received during the weekend, I did a review of the almost 5" of documentation I have on my Vette and here are a couple other things I wanted to mention: •I found I have a signed and notorized letter from the original owner outlining the history of the car as I have stated with two minor changes: •As far as the interior, I originally said only the carpet on the driver's side had been replaced. According to the notorized history from the orginal owner, both sides (floorboard only) have been replaced, •Also, the original owner documented the original fuel pump was replaced in 2003.
That is it, naturally, the nortorized history document goes with the car.
I've had several people ask me how much I paid for this car when I purchased it five years ago. I suppose there is no harm in giving that information out so for the record, I paid 36K. That should give you an idea of the potential value of this classic Corvette.
