Car history:
427ci/400hp Engine, 4 Speed Manual Transmission, Convertible Top, Side Exhaust, Power Steering, Tilt/Telescopic Column, AM/FM Radio, Side Vent Louvers.
Build Date=P18, Paint=984, Trim=ZQ4, which is November 18, Safari Yellow, & Black Vinyl, respectively.
Engine cast #=3963512, cast date is I 9 9 (September 9, 1969), the engine assembly date is 1016 (October 16), with a suffix code of LQ (400 tripower with 4 spd). Alternator: PN=1100884 Date=9K29. The end carbs are list#3659, date=843. The center carb is new with no date, but does have a list#4055. I believe these list numbers are correct for the Corvette, but the dates appear to be earlier. According to the ncrs manual, the date decodes as 8=1968, 4=april, and 3=week in april. Painted with a 2-stage paint in the original Daytona yellow color. The color does match the trim tag paint code. The paint is approximately 5 years old. It is in fairly good shape with some imperfections. On the passenger side, there are a couple of chips that have been touched up. They are about halfway down on the rear of the passenger door and near the front of the rear fender about half way down. There are also some faint stress cracks on tops of the front fenders and stress cracks in the corners of the hood, headlights, and deck lid. These are visible a few feet from the car. I would say the blemishes I mentioned range from 2 to 3 "footers". It is not Pebble Beach concourse paint, but is a nice driver quality paint with a great shine that you would not be ashamed of. Study the pictures to gauge for yourself. The front and rear bumpers have been professionally rechromed. The exterior door handles are new. The rear license bezel is new. The front and cross-flag emblems, rear CORVETTE letters, and side script emblems are new. Although I do not have any paper documentation to substantiate it, I believe the car is an original factory side pipe car. Look at the pictures to see where the factory workers wrote "N14", the sidepipe option code, in grease pencil behind the passenger seat next to the job number. It also has the insulation stuffed up on the sides by the factory to slow heat absorption in the passenger compartment. The exhaust pipes themselves on the car are original style, and appear to be older. They may be the original pipes, but I can’t be sure. They don’t sound like the aftermarket mufflers which have a different sound than original side mufflers. The covers were busted up and the chrome peeling when I got it, so I fixed up another set of insulators I had and installed fresh rechromed outer covers and boy do they look great. The rear panel is correct for a sidepipe car now, but has evidence of a rear exit exhaust being filled in. It's my understanding that the car was converted to undercar exhaust in the past and then back to the original side exhaust configuration. The vinyl soft top is new and in great condition. The front marker lenses and the tail light lenses are all new.
All the fiber optics work as the front and rear harnesses were replaced with nice new correct style harnesses. The transmission shifts fine into all 4 forward gears and goes into reverse just fine. I did crawl under it and looked to see if it was the original transmission. It is the original with the serial number stamped on the side. The shifter itself seems like it has a little more play than other cars I have had, but it works just fine. It has a new black chrome knob installed. The rally wheels appear to be original 15x8 Corvette rally wheels, but if I remember correctly, they have later dates. The Goodrich Radial T/As are brand new 235/70/15 with probably less than 100 miles. The center caps are original and are in pretty decent shape. The trim rings are the chrome plated stainless replacements and they look great. There is a spare tire under the car in the tub. The lock is missing from the spare tire tub. The wiper system works fine. The wiper door has a slight delay before it opens, but when it does, the wipers work fine. The washer pump is installed on the wiper motor, but I did not put any fluid in it to see if it worked. The headlight washer squirters and hoses are also installed. I would not ever squirt propolene glycol fluid on the car and paint anyway, and you probably would not either, but it's all installed to look correct. The headlight and wiper door override switches both work. The horns are replacement style horns and work fine. The under side of the car has not been restored. The frame of the car is not virgin like a southern or restored frame would be. It does have surface rust and some scale, but I believe it to be structurally sound. The car starts right up and runs great. It goes straight down the road with no pulling to one side or the other. It also brakes evenly. The interior was completely removed and replaced with new components starting with the correct color black 80/20 loop carpet. The storage compartment frame and door assembly is new. The center compartment has the original style black flocking liner. There is a correct style jack and jack handle in the jack compartment. The vinyl seats were recovered with correct style vinyl covers. The door panels are from Al Knoch with newly chromed lock bezels, handles, and new lock knobs. The felt window wipe strip is new. The weatherstripping on the entire car has been replaced. All of the center gauges, including the clock, work as does the tachometer and speedometer. The heater controls work correctly in all positions. The heater core was leaking and ruined the carpet (which was replaced), so it was replaced with a new core. This should give you peace of mind in knowing that this part is new. Its kind of a pain to change. The vent knobs operate the foot vents as they should. The original style "green letter" radio was installed in the car when I got it and was connected to the original speakers which were in really bad shape. I installed new speakers thinking that this might make it play, but I could not get it to play. It would be really hard to hear these terrible sounding original radios over the side pipes. I have a nice aftermarket radio in my other vette, but wanted to leave this one looking original, so I left it in there. The door ajar switch holes are closed in and the switches are not present. The courtesy lights work with both doors as they should. The turn signals work fine, but the turn signal canceller does not seem to always operate properly. I believe this car is an original 427 cubic inch 400 horse power engine optioned car. I do not have any documentation on it, but the evidence is there. It has a 27 inch big block radiator support with what appears to be the original Harrison radiator. I took both out to sand blast and paint, but they were in the car when I got it. The rear sway bar is installed, and it has obviously been there. The stub axles use the big block u-joint retainer caps instead of the small block u-bolts. And for what it's worth, the data plate indicated a 400 tripower, and it was worn in a manner consistent with the rest of the interior before I replaced it and the tachometer is a 5600 redline tach for a BB car. The car has a numbers matching 3963512 cast part number correct restoration motor. The engine cast date is I 9 9 (September 9, 1969), the engine assembly date is 1016 (October 16), and the body build date is P18 (November 18). All the dates line up very very nicely. The heads appear to be a little later dated early 70’s set. The carburetors that came with the car when I got it appeared to be a matched set, but the dates look like they are service dated in the early 70’s also. I’m not good with rebuilding carburetors, so I just bought a new center carburetor because the car would not idle right. I can give the center carb of the original set if you want it. The outer carbs kick in at about 4000 RPMs, and if you want it to open sooner, the outer carbs may need lighter springs, but when they do kick in, you know it. It looks like a transistor ignition module was once mounted forward of the driver fender where the factory put them, but it is not there now. I believe that the car may have once had a TI system. There is a lot of new bling bling under the hood as you can see. December 24, 2007.
