| Very nice pretty original 1968 Corvette Stingray Convertible with the 327 motor and 4-speed manual transmission. I purchased the car several years ago and have barely even driven it. It came from a California owner (not the original owner) who supposedly used the car on a daily basis to drive to and from his job. The car seemed to be clean (for a 1968 car) as per all of the pictures sent and mechanically the previous owner stated no complaint. When the car finally arrived to me here in Idaho I was not overly excited about the exterior color or the actual finish of the car. The interior was nice and the motor seemed fine as it ran great with no known leaks or obvious flaws. I decided to have the car painted at a local body shop which turned out to be a fiasco. I ended up doing much more work then what I had originally intended as is not uncommon when you go to the body shop and even more so when you work on older cars. I ended up doing some fiberglass repair work in the front end area underneath the nose as some it had been eaten away as a result of the Corvette sitting so far down and knocking on parking blocks, etc.... Also some re-fiberglassing was done inside the wheel well areas if I remember correctly. All in all I had the body shop go through the car pretty thoroughly and do whatever work that seemed to be necessary in order to make the car very nice. My intention from the original purchase date was to keep this car for a long time so I was not concerned about spending money on making it look good or maintaining 100% originality from an investment point of view... it was always intended to be driven and used every spring and summer, but I wanted it to be nice. As for the paint job, well I love shiny black and being that the interior is black I wanted it to match. The previous color was some rustoleum type color that did not work for me, and in the original pics when I bought the car the color showed as much more of a red or burgundy. It is amazing how color changes in person. Anyway, I had the body stripped and repainted and it looks very nice. I also had the engine compartment sprayed in flat black. By the way, the engine was out of the car while the body work was done. The paint is nice but by no mean perfect. It still needs a good buffing and as is with fiberglass, there are some minor cosmetic defects as per my opinion. All of the hardware had been removed prior to painting and all replaced. I believe that the majority of the hardware is all original, but in a few cases replacement parts were purchased and according to the body shop they were all "correct" parts bought from Corvette parts specialists. One of the few pieces that are still missing is the antennae on the driver's rear of the car. There are some pieces that I would replace if I were to keep the car, but since I need to sell I will not spend the money. For example, the chrome end pieces on top of the windshiled are pitted and would look better if new or re-chromed. This is all a matter of personal taste and what type of car you want. Now for the engine. I have a close friend of mine who is an engine specialist and he offered to give the engine a once over while the car was being painted. He pulled the engine and went through it very thoroughly, much more than a once over. The car has only 60k miles on it and as per my friend the engine shows that the miles are original and accurate to the best of his ability. He also took several pictures of the engine while it was out of the car and has numbers details of certain components. It is our belief that this is the original engine for the car and that it is now in very nice condition. He unneccesarily rebuilt the engine, but wanted to make sure he took the time to make sure it was all good for me. The work that was done was according to all original specifications and he is available for consult if you have any specific questions as to what was actually done. I have no clue at this point. He told me that most everything on the engine is original, stating some obvious items which are not such as spark plug wires, fan pulley, valve covers. Also, he went through all of the bushings and changed them where necessary. My friend is thorough and anal beyond belief. He has been building cars, rebuilding engines, customizing cars and engines for years, and in this area he is well know for his quality work. All in all this is a very nice 1968 Corvette Stingray. Taking into consideration its age, this is a great car. As you can see in the pictures the car needs to be cleaned as it is very dusty from being stored for the winter, but the day I took the photos it was raining and it has rained every day since. Note that the top is in like new condition with no tear as far as I can tell. The engine is awesome, the body is very nice, the wheels are original and clean, the top is great, and the interior is nice as well. 60,577 miles from the odometer. Colors from the trim plate. Built date is E23. March 25, 2009. |
