Posted 03/27/2022 When I acquired this 1971 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe LS5 454 this summer, I could not get there quick enough when I found it to be numbers matching and all original except for light restoration done a few years back. That restoration included body and paint, a full engine rebuild many upgrades and renewals to the front and rear suspension. Getting to the location and seeing the quality was a welcome surprise. Most people put their cars online with a handful of pictures and when I arrive to inspect the car, it is far from the quality I would even consider buying. This car was not one of those. Paid for the Corvette and took an immediate 300 mile road trip. The first thing I look for in a vintage Corvette is its exterior condition. It is easy to spot poor body work and previous damage history if you have been in the business for 33 years like I have. The first thing I do is a 10-20 foot spin around the car looking for mismatched panels and reflections that show poor workmanship. First arrival on this Corvette, well, you will see that you get to see exactly the same views I did of each beautiful panel and overall views of the entire car front to back and side to side. Body and panels on this car are exceptional. There is no evidence of prior major fiberglass repair anywhere and all seems are factory correct. The paint finish is absolutely beautiful and cut perfectly. Paint work was done a while ago so there are some faint scratches that no one but a paint guy would pick up. The blemishes are extremely fine and aside from one deep scratch on the passengers door, none are seen without extreme measures to detect. Glass is all great. Wheels, tires are great. Trim rings are not perfect but they are original. The chrome bumpers both front and rear are perfect. I can only imagine they have been re-chromed or are new. The overall appearance is exceptional, just not concours perfect. This 1971 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe LS5 454 comes with little documentation other than the original Owners Manual. Our seller told us he had lots of receipts for the engine rebuild and suspension restoration work, but when we showed up to buy the car, he told us that he would have to track it down to find it. Do not know if it will ever turn up but the evidence of what he claimed was in front of me in the condition and functionality of the Corvette. The drivetrain on this 1971 Cheverolet Corvette Coupe LS5 454 looks and performs exceptional. Starts right up and drives like it rolled out of the factory just a few years ago instead of 50 years ago. It is just crazy to look at this car and drive it and not feel like you have been transported back in time to 1971. I bought it in Twinn Falls, Idaho and drove it to Salt Lake, Utah then drove it several places here in Las Vegas. The day I took the pictures of the car, the power steering pump and pulley started to make a noise. The power steering rack below was all new, but the pulley on the pump must have broke and I ended up replacing the full power steering pump and pulley. Starting the car on cold days takes a minute for the car to warm up, but that is just a minute. The car drives, runs and shifts excellent. The engine was fully rebuilt less than a few thousand miles ago. I would not hesitate to drive the Corvette on a long trip. The body, the frame and the Interior show very well. Headlights work, the drivers and passengers doors open and shut to factory specification. The power windows work, although when the doors are closed, the rubber seals slow them down. I did notice that there is not a spare tire, jack or tools in the car. The is absolutely no rust on the frame either. This Corvette Big Block comes with some great options too. The chrome luggage rack, leather interior, deluxe interior with the wood grain doors, power windows, tilt telescopic steering wheel, p power brakes, power steering, t-top bags, car cover and air conditioning. All options for this year along with the 454 LS5 and the automatic transmission. Overall Assessment This 1971 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe LS5 454 is a fine example of very original investment quality Corvette. Not Concours, but definitely a Corvette that would be appreciated and any local car show and seen for its high quality finish, fit and original condition. This Corvette is a show car for sure, just not for judging purposes.
