| Car history: |
1976 Corvette Stingray L48, red with black leather ZJ1 interior, automatic transmission, air conditioned, power windows, power steering, power brakes, tilt telescopic wheel, tinted windows, cut pile carpet with pad, AM/FM radio with factory speakers on front dash and factory box speakers in back. This may be only one of 46,558 cars built like this in 1976. The car was manufactured in August of 1976. It runs on 91 Octane fuel or higher which 1976 Corvettes didn't come that way. This is a matching number car with the original engine number 1S444849, the engine date is G176 which is July 17th 1976 and was assembled July 23rd 1976, transmission number 1s444849, and rear axle number 3.08 and date was July 12th 1976. There is no evidence of restamping on the engine block. It comes with a luggage rack, tire tub, and original jack. The engine shows to be a 200 hp engine according to the emission code. There was not a 200hp option at that time, there was only a 180hp and 210hp, which was a L82. It has an original LJ emission code on it. 1976 L48 Corvettes came with LX code before February and XX code after February. This is not a reprinted sticker, it is the original one, LJ code was for 1972 engines with 200 hp. It has the markings of a 375 hydromatic transmission. The markings read B6A20N which translates B = turbo hydromatic built in Cleveland, 6= 1976, A20= January 20th, N= night shift and the VIN number is on a boss on drivers side behind shift lever. This would be either a 400 or 375, but it measures the length of a 375. A 400 is longer. Also, there is no evidence of any smog assembly ever on the engine. All 1976 Corvettes had A.I.R. on them. This was from a conversation with David McCllelan, chief engineer of Corvette from 1975-1992, He stated that every Corvette that rolled off the line had a catalytic convertor on it in 1976. However, if it was ordered as a racer it might not have had it. It also has a factory aluminum water pump, GM692-1AF1 racing water pump. It has GM397187 stamped on it which is a matching number. Aluminum water pumps were extremely rare if even heard of at that time on Corvettes. The suspension is FE7 Gymkhana Suspension which did not come out on L48 Corvettes, it only came out on L82 cars. It has the big front sway bar and heavy duty coil springs with the number AJ346940, this matches Gymkhana suspension according to GM Heritage records. It has a 308 axle OAW210 which translates 3,08 Warren, Michigan February 10 and was for highway use, the car is very fast and handles extremely well. The car is original except for radio which has been changed out. It has been repainted, it was originally mahogany and has every option except rear window defogger and aluminum wheels. I could not find a tank sticker or build sheet. From what I have found out I believe I am the 3rd owner. It has 59,000 miles on it which I believe is the original miles. Mr. McClellan told me there were not any COPO Corvettes built in 1976, which I thought it might be. McClellan said the car was probably ordered as a racer and was probably sold through sales and marketing and not engineering. If it was sold through engineering it would have been a COPO car which is a Corporate Office Production Order. With FE7 suspension any size engine and transmission could be ordered with the car and there were no restrictions according to GM Heritage records at that time. I have had the car about one year and it has had about $7,000.00 worth of new mechanicals on it including new front suspension complete, spindles, idler arm bushings, A frame bushings, upper and lower, ball joints, power steering unit complete, radiator core, shocks, brakes, brake lines, calipers, pads, rotors, new tires, carburetor rebuild, windshield wiper blades, lights, vacuum switches for lights, heater core, hoses, rubber fuel line, new battery, valve cover gaskets, oil and filter change, transmission and rear axle serviced, spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, air filter, rear trailing arms bearings and seals, I have never heard of a 1976 Corvette with these kind of options! I don' know the exact horse power of this car, but the car is extremely fast and is not a standard L48 engine!! I have not restored the car completely because I am seeking another project. I do this for a hobby and I have never found a car like this! I will offer it for sale like it is, which the paint is about a 7 out of 10 and the interior is about a 7 out of 10. The two things that do not work on it at this time is the radio and tachometer and I have a radio that goes with it and can fix the tachometer if need be. If the car does not sell I will restore it completely. The car will be for sale locally so I can end this listing anytime. |
