Monterey 2015, Lot S82 For performance aficionados and investors, L88 Corvettes stand alone. The example you are seeing here is at the pinnacle of that category. A documented roadster featuring a unique LeMans Blue-on-Bright Blue color combination, open-chamber cylinder heads, and excellent provenance, this meticulously restored and detailed rarity commanded a high 98.1 score in Top Flight NCRS judging in October of 2014.
Built in small numbers between 1967 and 1969, the 427 L88 package was not a vehicle for the faint of heart. In fact, Chevrolet was deliberately careful to price and market L88-optioned cars primarily to actual racers. Underrated at 430 horsepower, these were factory-built with mandatory options like the M22 4-speed transmission, F41 heavy-duty suspension, K66 transistor ignition, J50 power brakes and J56 heavy-duty disc brake calipers. One of the 116 examples built during 1969, the final year of availability and augmented with a Black vinyl hard top, this particular L88 is well-known among Corvette historians.
After being custom-ordered by the son of a wealthy Kentucky tobacco family who decided not to take delivery for personal reasons, the car ended up in Tennessee. It first entered the car hobby back in 1977 when the promoter of the Knoxville Corvette Expo, Bryan Cooper, had the opportunity to buy it. He in turn offered it to Corvette authority Paul Kitchen, and at that time they together dropped the gas tank and found the all-important tank sticker. Removed for safekeeping, the sticker remained with Kitchen when the car sold again sometime later, but it was reunited with the vehicle in November 1987 when new owners Joe Cheeks and David Love of Automania inquired about it to Mr. Kitchen. More recently, David Burroughs and his Prove It process were employed to scientifically verify that stickers authenticity.
The car was placed in storage almost 25 years, until February 2012, when it was delivered to renowned restoration expert Roger Gibson, who performed an all- encompassing frame-off restoration. Totaling 5,100 billed hours in a 19-month period, this spectacular machine has been exactingly returned to its as-built state. Its correct LeMans Blue paint with matching Bright Blue interior and Black vinyl auxiliary hardtop gives it a stunning appearance. The extensive use of NOS pieces and preservation of original components was coupled to a carefully executed driveline restoration including the open-chamber head L88 engine and M22 aluminum-case 4-speed. The sale comes with several signed documents noting its past history, including one from the original intended buyer Henry Baird, two three-ring binders showing the work done by Gibson with accompanying receipts, an NCRS shipping report and NCRS validation service. It will also come with the Prove-It report and the original tank sticker.
