Car history:
It has come time to sell my beloved corvette that I have owned since 2002. This has been one of the most enjoyable cars I have ever owned. It is as reliable as any of my newer vehicles, easy and relatively inexpensive to get parts for, easy to work on, inexpensive to insure (collector car insurance is great), and actually gets surprisingly good mileage (10-11mpg in town, 15-16 on the highway). Keep in mind, car is a 40 year old car and even though I'm pretty familiar and will attempt to describe all positive and negative aspects. Also, please note mileage shown is what is on the odometer but actual mileage is unknown. I purchased the car with about 75000 miles showing and it rolled over just recently. Cosmetic: This car is painted Monza Red and finished in a Saddle Interior. The car looks very nice and always gets great comments from all walks of life. However, I would characterize the paint as good as it is not show quality but also not in need of a full paint job. It looks glossy and clean but there are some stress fractures in the paint at the normal corvette places (headlights, top hood, fenders) that you don't really notice unless looking close. Both tops are included (black hard top, and white soft top) and both are in good to great condition. Windows are limo tinted (I know not for everyone but easy to remove and it's how I like them). New carpet in interior. Engine: The motor turns over immediately thanks to the recent addition of a brand new high performance starter. This is a relatively loud car with the big block motor, race side pipes with JCL baffle mufflers. You will hear this coming with old fashioned rump rump rump of a true muscle car. Motor was a recent build to 427 specs in last 20,000 miles. Its compression checks perfectly in all cylinders, runs great on today's supreme gasoline, and has plenty of power. Driveline: Mated to the 427 engine is a Muncie 4 speed transmission that is solid. No unusual gear noises. Driveline is solid and runs back to a 3.08 rear end. With the gearing and torque of the motor this car is a joy on the highway. At freeway and highway speeds, the engine runs at a great rpm to not be too loud but also to have power on tap. Need to pull up a hill and pass a semi? No problem, no need to downshift, just roll into the pedal slightly and wow, you are doing 90 past modern cars with a mere 300 hp struggling to maintain their 70mph speed. Brakes: Power brakes. 4 wheel independent brake system that is a staple of these corvettes works great. The system including parking brake has all been replaced in past 10,000 miles. Steering, suspension, wheels and tires: Steering is tight. With the manual steering it is heavy at low speeds and responsive, smooth as you increase your speed. Suspension is fresh with shock absorbers replaced less than 15k miles ago. Rear spring needs no work. Front springs were just replaced less than 2k miles ago with heavy duty springs. Front ball joints were also replaced less than 2k miles ago. Car sits at ride height of the famed factory L88 cars. Front tires (225 width) are brand new. Rear tires (255 width) are about 50% tread. Wheels are modern with vintage flair and 17" in front with 18" in rear. They really set this car apart. This car drives very smooth and straight down the road considering its wider than stock tires. Electrical and other systems: All dash and exterior lights work, all gauges work (clock works but will need to be reset occasionally - I think that is normal with this vintage... sometimes it is a little fast over time and sometimes it is a little slow). Vacuum system works with headlights popping up, windshield wiper door coming open. New gas tank in last 5 yrs. I made a copy of the original build sheet as it was too tattered to keep. If your interested in the origination of the car the gas tank build sheet shows the car was built at the Canadian Chevrolet factory and began its life as a 390hp 427 car, automatic transmission (was converted well before I bought the car), in cortez silver and blue interior, black top and push button radio. Also included: 1969 assembly manual, Repair manual, and corvette restoration book. Anything wrong with car? Here are the only things I am aware of and I have been driving this car for some time. I have also looked at many corvettes for sale and can tell you that most that are advertised as "very good" have at least this many flaws for this vintage: First, I already mentioned the various paint chips. The second hand on the clock seems to be only half size. I think the second half of it broke off a long time ago. If you are a NCRS guy this car probably isn't for you. It is not the original block or transmission from the factory and is not painted correct color. There are a variety of fasteners that are not factory correct. Headlights don't come up at the same speed but come up quick anyway (not sure if anyone's do of this year). Seat belt warning light is not hooked up. Oil leak at rear main between tranny and motor (this has been there since motor was installed - I keep meaning to pull the motor out and fix but figured I'd wait until replacing the clutch or something. I just add a bit in every 500 miles or so and park on a mat). Door lock on driver's side tends to jam on occasion if locking. Windshield wiper fluid pump is not hooked up. $35,000. 886 miles from the odometer. Color codes from the owner. Built date is F10. August 31, 2010.
