Classic color combinations never go out of style, and this 1972 Corvette is a great example. Sure, the red is borrowed from a late-model, but doesn’t it look luscious on the Corvette’s curvaceous bod, especially with the tan interior? Add in a smooth 350 and a substantial list of options and pretty soon this one becomes hard to resist. I don’t know what the actual color is called, but it sure looks like Magnetic Red off a 1999 C5 to my eye. With great depth, a lot of metallic and maybe a hint of pearl, too, it is incredibly eye-catching. It was originally code 946 Elkhart Green, but the work was done right as you would never suspect - this car was taken apart, repainted, and carefully reassembled years ago, and it still looks amazing today. As will all vintage Corvettes, the body isn’t flawless, but after all that’s the appeal of the fiberglass body – it might ‘wave’ at you here and there, but it definitely won’t ever rust and the relatively light weight compared to steel sure doesn’t hurt performance or handling either. The chrome bumpers were getting ready to bow out in 1972, but the look is almost delicate, accenting the eggcrate grilles and rectangular exhaust ports out back. GM called it “Saddle” but the tan interior of this Corvette can also be called gorgeous. The high-backed buckets feature built-in shoulder belts that are a contemporary touch. The carpets show a bit of wear, particularly in back between the seats, but hey, ‘70s shag wasn’t built to last, was it? Both door panels are so nice they have to be reproduction items and the rest of the dash matches quite nicely, so it all looks about the same age. Gauges are crisp and clear and likely original, not restored, although the AM/FM radio is definitely an aftermarket unit. A/C is always nice on a coupe, and it blows ice cold in this one thanks to a recent upgrade to R134a refrigerant. And once you’re settled behind the wheel, there’s really no view like this one, with those voluptuous fenders way out ahead of you. Between those fenders, however, Chevy fitted a 350 cubic inch V8 and that’s the original, numbers-matching piece in there today. It’s been freshened a bit, with newer orange paint on the block and a few good attempts to dress it up, but overall it’s quite original and in perfect condition for the guy who likes to drive. It barks to life quickly, like all small block Chevys do, and has a great performance car rumble from the dual exhaust system. The chassis is clean and driver-grade, rust-free, but no something you’ll need to worry about if you get caught out in the rain. Classic Rally wheels were standard-issue in ’72, although the spinner center caps are a nice addition and the fat 245/60/15 tires really stuff the wheel wells. Not all Corvettes have to be “perfectly imperfect” show cars, and there’s a lot of fun to be had in great drivers like this. Call today!
