Car history: |
1969 Corvette w/ T-tops, 427/ 435, Tri-Power. LeMans Blue with blue interior. 35,000 original miles. Original Tank Sticker. This car is the real deal. I searched what seemed like forever to find this car, sifting through the countless imposters or wanna-be's. Not to take anything away from any Corvette, it's just that I was searching for a documented 435 car with low miles and a nice amount of originality, not a clone or a trailer princess. That's exactly what this car is. Let me tell you a little more about it. This car was originally sold from a Chevy dealership in Ohio. I believe the second owner had the car up until his passing in 2001. I have a copy of the back of his title's lien release in 1973, after he paid the car off. There is a gentleman that worked on Corvettes and did warranty work for the Chevrolet dealership back then who is familiar with this car. It is my understanding that he is still around. Anyway, not long after this car was originally sold, it swallowed a valve (like many of the higher revving 435 cars) due to the brittleness of the valve spring retainers. At that time the engine case was replaced with a "real" GM CE replacement block which is what is still in this car today. The original owner also asked for the tri-power set up to be removed in place of a four barrel. The mechanic retained the original tri-power set up for years until the original owner requested that it be put back on. What's nice is that the set up is all original. I have seen so many either patched together by mechanics who weren't familiar with the vacuum secondaries or over restored with all that nifty made in Taiwan repro stuff. Also, sometime in the 70's the car was repainted the original color and period silver and blue pin stripes were added (check out the photos). The paint is in decent shape, much better than a "10-footer", probably, nice, local show level. There are some rock chips and some minor bubbles on the rear of the left front fender, but other than that, it's nice. I believe all the body panels, including the hood are original and I can find no evidence of any kind of body work or repair. Apparently, the car sat for long periods during the late 70's and 80's until it was purchased from the estate by the third owner, also an Ohio State resident. He put some money into getting the car back into running shape, although he told me it did not need much other than exhaust, tires, brakes and a tune up. This was in 2004 and he drove the car very little also. I purchased the car from him approximately two years ago and other than the original radiator (which I replaced with a DeWitts aluminum, painted black), I have done very little to the car. The third owner is still around in Ohio and has more detailed information on the car's history. Exterior: As noted above, the paint is nice, but not a show winner. When the original owner had the car repainted, he also had the gas cap and wiper door chromed. Very 70's. I had planned to have this car repainted, all back to original, even had the appointment set, but couldn't pull the trigger. The paint is nice and there is something about the pinstripes and chrome additions that add credibility to the car. That is, those additions are clearly from the 70's and it's obvious that the body of the car hasn't been screwed around with since then. Interior: The interior is the real gem of this car. It is as close to mint as you can get. The carpet is a little worn (very little), the passenger seat has a wear mark on the lower left side, and the driver's side door panel has what looks like a matching blue paint stain, but that's about it. The gauges are immaculate. All fiber optics work. Everything is original, still has that old Corvette smell. Again, just another sign of originality. Engine: Almost everything I can find is matching numbers. The alternator, radiator (which has been replaced due to leak, but still have it), fan clutch (which needs to be rebuilt), heads, intake, carbs, exhaust manifolds, etc. Frame: Super. Light rust, but only surface. No evidence of repairs. No major whacks, the engine cradle cross member is in great shape, not beat to death like so many others. The A-arms are just about mint. Operation: Okay. This is a low mileage original car that has had very little done to it. What's nice, is that because its so low mileage, the engine and underside doesn't have that caked, covered over, re-bolted, jury rigging that so many cars have experienced through out the years. That being said, most everything works pretty well, however, I have not driven the car much at all and I would probably have a few things done, to make it drivable on a daily basis. One of the carbs has a small gas leak and all three should be rebuilt and adjusted although they work okay right now. The right front caliper is leaking a little and needs to be replaced. That being said, the car is a monster. When those secondaries kick in the front of the car almost jumps off the ground. The new exhaust has no mufflers, but is chambered and sounds awesome. Not too loud, but deep. A quick note about convertibles: I searched for one originally until I drove a big block convertible. It drove like a sneaker compared to the coupe. I found with the rear window popped out and the t-tops out it was pretty darn close to a convertible and handled a lot better. Documentation: First and foremost, I have the original tank sticker, which is very legible. Of course it matches the vehicle and shows the following options: 435-HP TURBO-JET 427 V8, BRIGHT BLUE VINYL TRIM, FULL-TRANSISTOR IGNITION SYS, POSITRACTION AXLE 411 RATIO, 4-SPD CLOSE-RATIO TRANSMISSION, F70x15 WHITE LETTERED TIRES, AM/FM PUSH BUTTON RADIO, SOFT-RAY TINTED WINDOWS. Also, I have copy of the title from what I believe is the second owner in 1973, a copy of the title in the wife's name after the passing of her husband, a copy of the last owner's title and of course, a current Florida State title. Additionally, I have communication with the last owner who has in depth knowledge of the car. I also have a few miscellaneous registrations. The former owner has a picture of when they dropped the tank originally to discover and remove the tank sticker. 34,723 miles. Colors from the owner. October 12, 2009. |
