Car history: |
8,830 Original Miles. Absolute Time Capsule. Original "Born-With" Drive-Train and Components. Benchmark Survivor Candidate. Completely Documented. I'm retired and have been collecting Classic Chevrolets and Pontiacs for nearly 30 years. I have developed my own criteria for collecting. I call it the "Five Ps". It's really pretty simple: Provenance (documented ownership history), Paperwork (factory documentation), Patina (all of the original factory finishes and markings should be in place), Preservation (the car must still have its original "born-with" equipment and be properly maintained) and Performance (does the car still perform as intended, does everything function properly or is it simply a museum piece). In short, you can learn most of what you need to know about collecting cars by watching Antiques Roadshow. Do you want the refinished/repaired Chippendale Cabinet or do you want the all original, perfect patina, well-documented piece? While there are some great cars that do not meet all of these criteria. This one certainly meets them all! Gertrude Stevens (1972-1994) Gertrude purchased this Corvette from Hawkeye Chevrolet in Burlington, Iowa. She always loved Corvettes and as this was her first, she took especially good care of it. The car was always kept in her garage under cover. It was only driven on fair weather days. Occasionally, she would take it out on the Interstate and exercise it as she was told that this would be good for the car. I recently spoke with Gertrude and she was thrilled to hear that her "Little Blue Corvette" was still around and in the same condition as when she sold it. She was kind enough to send me a very nice letter and included a copy of the Original Sales Contract that she kept all of these years. Larry McCarty (1994) Gertrude sold her Corvette to Larry McCarty from Burlington, Iowa. He told her that he was going to show the car but, according to Gertrude, he was in poor health and sold the Corvette to Rick Riley in very short order. Rick Riley (1994-2003) Rick Riley from Junge Chevrolet was responsible for the next ten years of ownership and just like Gertrude, the Corvette was kept inside and properly maintained. I purchased the Corvette from Rick in 2003. This Corvette has never been shown or judged. I have always wanted to bring the car to Bloomington Gold but, I never did. This will leave ample opportunity for the next owner to win the awards and accolades or simply enjoy the car as I have. Paperwork: The following documentation is included with the sale of the Corvette: - Hawkeye Chevrolet Pre-delivery Checklist - Temporary Registration and Tags - Original 1972 License Plates - Complete Owners Documents including Manuals, Trim Ring Installation, EPA, etc. - Chevrolet Warranty Booklet and Protecto-Plate - Original Factory Tank Sticker (including photos of removal) - Original Chevrolet Brochures - Gertrude's Letter and Copy of the Original Sales Contract Patina: I have taken nearly 300 pictures of this beautiful Corvette. This includes all of the documentation, complete under-carriage, engine, transmission, differential, suspension, interior, tires/wheels, and the removal of the tank to recover the tank sticker/buildsheet. All of the finishes, stampings and factory markings are in place as you would expect of such a low-mileage, well-cared for car and they are fantastic. If you're a Corvette person, you know how important all of these markings are to the history of assembly techniques. These cars are only original once. You can always restore a car but, I would rather own one that was built by Chevrolet. Highlights: 100% Original Paint and less than 6% were Bryar Blue Metallic (Please Note: This was a 1972 only paint color and only 1,617 Corvettes were ever finished in this hue.) - All Original Glass - Completely Original Interior in perfect condition including carpets and floor mats - Original Tires/Wheels/Trim Rings & Center caps - Original Spare Tire never on the ground with factory tags and wax balancing mark - Untouched Original Engine Compartment with Factory markings - Suspension is completely original including shocks, tags, etc. - Completely Original Exhaust System - The only non-original items on this Corvette are the upper radiator hose, the battery and oil/air/gas filters. Preservation: This Corvette has lived a charmed life. It has always been well-stored and maintained. All of the mechanical components of the Corvette are original and in perfect working order. This includes: The Entire Drive-train. The Corvette still has its original "born-with" numbers matching engine, transmission, and differential. Every factory stamp is correct and original. 8,837 miles from the odometer. Motor suffix code is V0502CKX. Color codes from the trim plate. Built date is J08. June 27, 2010. |
