Car history:
2) I am helping my brother in law, Steve Owen of Brandon, Ms. sell this car. This is a matching numbers car (except for the differential) bought new in Pensacola, Fl. on Dec 14, 1969. The build date was Oct 15, 1969. The original owner was Robert W. Jacobs (we have the original Protect-O-Plate). Mr Jacobs was a Naval aviator. He sold it around 1975 with 43000 miles on it to R.T. Haynes, a Marine Officer, in Beaufort, SC. The third owner was Commander David Somers Jr. Cmdr Somers sold the car in 1988 to his son Cmdr David Somers III. That gentleman kept the car until 2012 when it was sold to a Ron Wells in Charleston SC. Mr. Wells sold the car in 2014 to a retail classic car establishment in Appling, Ga. My brother in law bought the car in July 2015.
The car itself is 350ci/350hp car, the original engine. It has a 4 speed transmission and a 3.36 posi-traction rear end ratio (this differential was replaced in Jan 2000). The car is an original power steering, power brake and factory air car. We have the Build Sheet. We have many original documents for the car showing work done on the car through the years.
In Oct, 1988 the engine was completely rebuilt by Cmdr Somers, Jr.. The block, according to the documentation did not need boring. TRW pistons, bearings, timing gear, etc and other internals were put into the engine at that time. The mileage then was approximately 65000. A new cam and lifters were installed and the heads reworked. In 2012 Cmdr Somers III did considerable work on the car including a new gas tank, master cylinder, Pittman arm, water pump and more ($2178.16). The radiator had been replaced in 5/2000.
The fourth owner Ron Wells had the car repainted in the correct 983 Code Fathom Green paint in approximately 2013. The paint is nice, not show car quality, but certainly presentable. Mr Wells also replaced the seat covers and the carpets at that same time. The door panels are original although the cloth inserts were replaced. The driver's door panel has a small crack in it. The T tops are in good shape and the weather striping for the car has been replaced, probably when it was painted.
My brother in law has done considerable work on the car over the two years he has owned it. The interior was completely removed and the entire front and cargo compartment were coated with Dynamat (sound and vibration) and Dynaline (heat). That really made the car a more quite driver. In the last 4 months a Vintage Air Conditioning system was put in the car. This is their Sure Fit product that uses the original controls and vents. The system runs great and the cold air will about run one out of the car! The car operates in a cool manner (195+/- degrees) in even the hottest traffic conditions. The radio and speakers were replaced (the original radio comes with the car). The glass in the car is acceptable but has a small scratch or two. The front windshield has been replaced. The glass is tinted all around.
Many (most) of the vacuum hoses on the car were replaced. The headlight doors and the complicated windshield wiper doors and wipers all work as they should. The windshield wiper/headlight washer system does not work. One of the headlight door actuators was replaced as was the vacuum canister for the car. Although the speedometer does work the odometer is not working.
Much work has been done on the car at Mr. Owen's expense. A new carburetor was installed along with a Petronix ignition system. All new belts and most of the hoses are replaced. The car has a new starter and new battery. The front end was completely rebuilt with new ball joints, control arm bushing, wheel bearings and seal, tie rod ends and center link. New shock absorbers are on each corner. On the rear new u-joints (plus one new half shaft) were installed and the bearings in the trailing arms were replaced. The car has a new exhaust system from the the manifolds back with stainless exhaust pipes behind the mufflers. We have all of the receipts for these items. The Rally wheels were new in 2013. The old PO2 Deluxe Wheel covers go with the car. The tires are 15 Goodyear Radial T/A's with what to appear very few miles on them.
This car is about as good as Mr Owen knows how to make it. It is a comfortable long distance driver that looks great to boot. It has had a ton of work done on it and should be a dependable vehicle. The car is in Brandon, Ms (just E of Jackson, Ms near intersection of I20 and I55.) The car can be viewed and driven there. $18,200 (RnM) on September 12, 2017.
1) Bought new in Pensacola Fla by USMC Lt who was transferred to Beaufort SC MCAS
Car was sold to fellow Marine Lt in 1973. Car was aquired by Trimmere Chevrolet in Beaufort and sold to USN Cmmdr in 1974. He was transferred to Charleston Naval Base where the car remained until he sold it to his son, another USN Cmmdr in 1988. Car sat for unknown number of years until I purchased it in Feb 2014. Car remains in Charleston SC where it is being brought back to its former glory.
