| Vvery special 1969 Corvette convertible. This Fathom Green, with Green interior and a White soft top 427/450hp roadster, with a Turbo Hydra-Matic Automatic transmission, is believed to be one of two Corvettes to receive the Berger Power Pack engine performance upgrades at the famed Grand Rapids, Michigan Chevrolet dealership. Berger Chevrolet is a legend among Chevy performance car fans due to the unique niche it carved out in the musclecar era. While Yenko, Nickey, and Baldwin Chevrolet became known for selling dealer-hot-rodded Chevys, Berger focused chiefly on the sale of high-performance Chevy hardware. In 1968 Berger Chevrolet opened one of the first high-performance parts departments in the country and became the go to dealership for die hard gearheads would do anything for a little more power under the hood. GM had developed plenty of go-fast hardware, while they were involved in racing. However, in 1963, GM management issued an edict prohibiting their divisions from being directly involved in racing or publicly supporting racing and so their high performance racing hardware was no longer readily available to the public. The racing hardware wasn't destroyed or eliminated. It was still in the Chevrolet parts book; but, it was hidden under obscure listings; so, most dealership parts departments didn't know how to order these special high performance parts. It took Jim Luikens, a former NHRA racer and head of the High Performance Parts department at Berger to break the code allowing him access to order special hi-performance factory parts and make them available to those who wanted their cars faster then factory production. Berger only did a few big-block engine conversions. The focus of their business was making high performance parts available to those who wanted to build their own hot rods. It's the limited number of big-block conversions by Berger that makes this 1969 Corvette so rare.
