| I've owned this little 1972 LT-1 for 10 years. HISTORY: When I bought the car in 1997, it was from a dealer, but it was essentially on consignment from the 2nd owner. I have the original bill of sale and the protect-o-plate which shows that the car was bought on January 14, 1972 from Enyeart Chevrolet in Michigan City, Indiana with the following options: Sunflower Yellow paint (912), Black vinyl interior and top (400), Power brakes (J50), 4 Speed Transmission (M21), AM/FM Radio (U69), H.O. 350 engine (LT1). To the best of my knowledge, the buyer, traded in his 1970 Chevelle for this car and then proceeded to put it in his wife's name - probably for insurance reasons. The car was sold to the second owner through a dealer in 1993, and then through the same dealer to me in 1997 after the second owner had some financial issues. I have a couple of original maintenance receipts from its life before I owned it and all the receipts since then. CONDITION: Mechanically, the car is in EXCELLENT condition. This is a numbers matching LT-1 with the correct block and the correct date-coded heads and all. It's the real deal. I just bit the bullet and had the engine completely rebuilt and had a completely new exhaust system put in. I'm still in the break-in period but the engine sounds amazing and runs beautifully. I've only put about 6200 miles on the car since I bought it, but over the past 10 years, I've had the following work done on the car - all of it has been done by a well-respected local Corvette specialist here in Austin: Replaced shocks, bushings, bearings, etc. Overhauled transmission. Clutch kit. Replaced heater core. Rebuilt carburetor. Replaced points with Pertronix ignitor for reliability. Replaced water pump and re-cored radiator. Replaced exhaust. Rebuilt engine. Cosmetically, it should be looked at as somewhat of a "survivor." The interior is original and has one small tear in the driver's seat. From what I can tell, almost all of the paint is original - the passenger rear quarter seems to have been repainted at one time but the rest seems to be the original paint. To be perfect, the car really needs new paint - it looks great from 10-15 feet, but up close you can see that it's 35 year old paint - spider cracks, some scratches that were touched up, and and a slight dullness. This was a northern car and, although it probably didn't see much snow, the frame under-carriage has the expected surface rust - nothing serious, though, everything is solid. SUMMARY: This is a very original, beautiful, numbers matching, convertible LT-1 with great history. There were only 1,741 LT-1's built in 1972 and the number of convertibles was far less. Finding a relatively unmolested one in this condition is rare. I know I searched for years before I bought this one. Colors from the trim plate. 81,888 miles. November 23, 2008. |
