Car history:
1969 Corvette L88 SCCA/IMSA Race Car. The first of two "Babe" Headley #78 Corvette Race Cars. Milton "Babe" Headley was one of the most successful privateer Corvette racers of the 1970's and was a factor at every event he entered. During the 1960's, Headley owned Babe's Garage in Paoli, Pa. and in 1968 he purchased this very early production 1969 (VIN #00187) Dark Green T-Top tri-power L89 with aluminum heads and soon upgraded the car to full-blown L88 for off road competition. Babe succeeded in autocrossing which led to SCCA Solo II and hill climbs and obtained his SCCA license in 1973 and that year achieved third in the NE Division rankings and finished fourth at the National Run-offs. In 1974, entries in IMSA GTO, SCCA A-Production, and Trans-Am events followed along with a FIA driving certificate, opening doors to International events at Daytona, Sebring, and Watkins Glen, and then after the 1974 this well-known Corvette was retired. Famed Tom Bambard located this car in 1991 and had Ted Kempgens of Tampa's Creative Motor Sports restore the car back to its 1974 configuration and reunited Babe, the Corvette, and most of the old crew for the car's post-restoration debut at the 2005 HSR Sebring Endurance Challenge with Babe at the wheel. Restored and track-ready today, this Corvette was editorialized in the August/September 1977 Corvette News and August 2005 VETTE magazine (six pages) and remains a link to the days when skill and enthusiasm, not money, ruled the race track. 3-ring binder and original helmet included. This Corvette was recently offered at no reserve by RM auction with a value estimate of $65,000.00 to $95,000.00. May 1, 2010.
