| Car history: |
C3 Corvette fans, here's one to pack away! 12,478 Miles are all that's on the clock and the car is very original! Here's what's been changed-the spark plugs and wires (Delco replacements,) the battery, the paint and the oil. Those are the original issue tires, belts and gaskets, that's the original interior from roof panels to carpet padding inside. Time for a history lesson, then we're off for a tour!
With largely evolutionary changes, Corvette marched into 1979 with little new to offer buyers. Stagflation had hit hard enough to push the car's base price over $10,000 for the first time, landing at over $12,000. The base engine gained ten horsepower, the optional five. Halogen high-beam headlamps were phased in. The basic AM/FM radio option became standard and the crossed-flags body insignia returned. The lightweight seats previewed in the '78 Pace Car Replica were now standard, bringing more rearward travel and different inertia seatback locks. On cars with automatic, final drive ratio was lowered from 3.08:1 to 3.55:1. GM had little to worry about their car being a stale item, though-hey sold 46,776 '78 models, the most in Corvette history. Their confidence was rewarded as lightning managed to strike twice: At 53,807 units, no other model year Corvette from 1953 to present sold so well. We have the ORIGINAL window sticker-here's how this one was built! Noteworthy but not mentioned is air conditioning which was added to the standard equipment list for '79.
Stephen Troia of Warren, Michigan, picked the car up right at the beginning of summer '79 on June 5, aided by GM's option 1 plan for employees. We'll start underneath first. Go to the back of the car-the mufflers aren't just originals, L48 is stamped straight into the cases! The paper tag still hangs from the gas tank and the original spare has never seen the light of day. Inspection marks dot the undercarriage from head to tail. Obviously there isn't any rust or other problems under here! The wheels and tires are the originals, Corvette steel rally wheels with 225/70/15 Goodyear Polysteel radials. The steering is tight and the brakes work as they should. Underhood next-we'll get the greasy stuff out of the way. Open the hood to reveal nearly every component bolted in by the St. Louis plant, save for the short list mentioned in the first paragraph. Original blue paint coats the engine, the new-for-'79 dual snorkel air cleaner wears its original flexible fresh air hoses, the power brake booster retains its gold cadmium finish and identification sticker, the radiator and vacuum hoses are the original date coded pieces, and even the exhaust heat riser tube retains its original tower clamps! Drop the hood and look over the body. Now, I love to use words like "gorgeous" and "flawless" to describe our paint jobs and that is what this car's paint is, gorgeous and flawless. The low miles and originality makes this one a true collector's item! The interior is just about perfect. The carpets and original mats are clean, the gauges are bright, all power items like the windows, locks, wipers and steering work as they should, and the A/C blows ice cold. All four speakers are functioning and the radio pulls in AM and FM stations well. The seats are very supple and hold you in place for hard cornering. The light group makes seeing in the dark that much easier, and the original T-top bags are in the rear. Fastback C3's just keep going up in value, providing they've got the right credentials: Low miles, beautiful paint, and zero modifications. This car hits on all three and is a blast to drive around as a summer fun car.
