Car history:
This handsome 1968 Corvette is what a majority of Corvette buyers received when they stepped up and bought an all-new Stingray. With a strong-running and built-up 327, a 4-speed gearbox, and a fantastic color combination, it's an ideal way to own a vintage Corvette without spending a fortune.
British Green is more subdued than you'd expect on a Corvette, but who can argue when the car looks this good? Thanks to a comprehensive respray a few years ago in California, it looks awesome cruising down the road and the dark green paint has just the right amount of metallic in it to really glow when the sun hits it just right. And on any vintage 'Vette, the important thing is that the fiberglass underneath is quite well preserved and shows none of the usual cracking or split seams that you find on neglected cars. The restoration was completed a few years ago, but it still has a great look that will have people turning to watch as you motor past. The chrome bumpers look great and there's a luggage rack to add some interest. It's the kind of car that you won't mind packing up for a week on the road, perhaps heading to one of the great Corvette events that are held all over the country and where driving your car is 90 per cent of the fun. And when you arrive, an early C3 convertible will find a very enthusiastic crowd waiting to have a closer look.
Chevrolet called this interior Saddle and it's been freshened over the years and looks fantastic today. One look at the interior will convince you that this has always been a beloved car. The seat covers were custom made and the door panels and carpet are new, so it has a clean look that's rather inviting. A newer and fatter leather-wrapped steering wheel continues to link the Corvette to its European inspirations and gives it an upscale look inside, and the gauges look great. Items such as the 1968 Corvettes debuted the fiber-optic lamp monitoring system in the center console and there's a newer AM/FM/cassette stereo system that sounds awesome in the vintage ragtop and there are speakers tucked behind the seats with the chrome roll hoop. And, of course, it's hard to resist a Corvette with a shift-it-yourself gearbox, especially when it's topped by a Hurst cue ball. A snug-fitting tan convertible top stows easily in just a few seconds, so there's really no excuse not to enjoy your new 'Vette alfresco.
the 327 cubic inch V8 was recently rebuilt by a certified Corvette mechanic with a lot of new components, so it runs like a small block Chevy should. And while the 327 lived in the shadow of the mighty 427, it's important to note that this car will idle all day in traffic and not foul its plugs, it's considerably easier on gas, and quite honestly, with upgrades like aluminum heads, an Edelbrock intake, and 4-barrel carburetor, this is still a very potent machine. There's plenty of chrome and stainless under the hood and a big radiator keeps it nice and cool. The 4-speed Muncie snaps off rapid-fire shifts like a bolt-action rifle, and the suspension rides better than you'd expect from a car with this one's capabilities. Classic Rally wheels are a period-correct look on a Corvette and these wear 235/60/15 Firestone radials. 56,740 miles from the odometer. BiN $35,995. August 2, 2015. Sold for $30,000 on May 4, 2016.
