1981 Chevy Corvette, T-Top Road Rocket, Clean and Original VIN 1G1AY8767BS402359
There’s an old saying in the collector car world: Any vehicle can be restored, given enough time and money, but it can only be factory-original once! If you follow our auctions regularly, you’ll remember our last stingray Corvette crossed the Atlantic to a new home in Holland, and I’m sure there’s a good chance another European collector may end up with this very nice Chevy! This Vette was owned and driven very sparingly here in the Seattle/Tacoma area over the past three decades. It came to us directly from a Seattle-area Ford dealer that took it as a trade-in from the long-term owner a short ago. The paint is great and you’ve gotta love the look of these factory-optioned alloys on this car – a very cool vibe! They’re wrapped with 255/60R15 Performance radials. Tread wear is still at least 75% all around and NO road rash anywhere! There are no rock chips on the front valance or even really any paint scratches. What you see in my photos is not the result of a detail, this car came to us in this superior, original condition! It literally had two sets of floor mats protecting the ultra-clean carpets.
If you have questions or would like to discuss a sale before the end of the eBay listing, feel free to contact me here at Best Auto. My name is Mark Thompson and my direct number is 206-914-1173.
The photos really do tell the Vette’s story. I’m always happy when we come across these well-preserved, original vehicles and are then able to offer them here to you! I believe it still has the same paint it wore the day it drove off the St. Louis assembly line (yes, it still holds quite a shine too). I’m not a body or paint guy, but I don’t find evidence of any exterior work having been done. About the only real flaw is one of the front hood hinges has worked loose and will need to be remounted, so you just open the hood carefully. Being a fiberglass-bodied car, rust isn’t quite as big an issue, but because of the mild climate here in western Washington State our winter roads are never salted anyway. First sign of a snow flake; everyone panics and just stays home! I’d be very surprised if this roadster has seen many winter roads during its life. There’s NO discernable rust in the frame that we’ve found. Feel free to climb over, under and around this rig - I absolutely know you’ll come up smiling!
Please take another good look at the interior photos as well. Settle into the driver’s seat and you’ll quickly recognize that just about everything is clean and factory original right down to the door pull handles. When was the last time you came across thirty-year-old door panels this nice? The carpets are spotless and covered with color-matched carpet floormats. Both vinyl/leather bucket seats are as clean and unfaded as the pics show with only a small amount of wear to the seatback of the drivers side. I’m extremely impressed with the condition of the dash gauges, too. They’re as clear and bright as the day this car left the assembly line. The former owner was smart in replacing the original Delco cassette radio with an Alpine CD player and it works fine.
Mechanically, I feel the Corvette is in great shape. Even after sitting in our storage warehouse for a few days it starts right up at the first few cranks – you just can’t beat the bulletproof 5.7 Liter L81 V-8’s that all Corvettes came with that year. While driving it after we took delivery, I can report that it freeway accelerates and cruises smoothly through all the gears to 70 MPH just as it should and that the brakes feel just fine – no pulling or fading. I can’t tell you how much fun it was last Friday to store the “Cool Ray” glass roof pieces in the back and then drive topless for the first time this spring!
If you’re in the market for an original, super-clean, great driving T-top car, please give this coupe your kind attention. I seriously doubt you can find another in this shape, with these miles AND with a ridiculously low reserve! As a decade-long Ebay seller with hundreds of satisfied online buyers, I want you to bid with confidence knowing that this car looks, runs and drives as it should and that it is being properly represented to you.
We’ve helped arrange long-distance shipping for many of our customers, but I also have no problem encouraging bidders to do what others from as far away as Alaska, Chicago, Arizona, Eastern Canada, Florida and even the Mexican Baja have done – fly in (We’ll pick you up at Sea-Tac International five miles away), pop off the glass tops and then drive home cross-country the same day! I wouldn’t hesitate (and in fact, I encourage you) to do so. Overseas buyers are always welcome, too! We’ve helped ship many cars to England, Scandinavia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand over the past ten years.
