Car history:
This 1968 Chevrolet Corvette will have you seeing red in all the best ways. With a numbers matching L79 327 V8, four-on-the-floor, and a matching hardtop, it's a prime example of what an affordable first-year C3 convertible should be. Code 974 Rally Red is this car's original color, and it's so great the nearly every inch of the car is covered in it, even in traditionally chromed places like the mirrors and rocker panels. Plus, the included hardtop and custom spoiler are all covered in the same rosy hue. Even the taillights are now a bolder solid red. The effect is a stunning Corvette that stands out in a crowd without looking too outrageous. But even with these custom touches, the best brightwork is still showcased in this droptop. Those chrome bumpers offer a classic look that neatly blends the cutting-edge design with old-school sports car fashion. And the rally wheels are truly iconic.
No matter if you have on the red hardtop or the white folding roof, underneath is a cool highly original red interior. The bucket seats, carpets, door panels, dashboard, and nearly every other inch of this interior carries an aggressive red that matches quite nicely with the exterior. Breaking up this sea of crimson is a skinny woodgrained steering wheel that continues to link the Corvette to its European inspirations. Ahead of that is the classic dual pod gauge design for the large spedo and tach, and to the side is a full set of auxiliary readouts. 1968 Corvettes debuted the fiber-optic lamp monitoring system in the center console, which is always a cool feature for first-time Corvette owners, and there's an upgrade to an AM/FM cassette stereo that doesn't look out of place in this very original presentation. And of course, it's hard to resist a Corvette with a shift-it-yourself gearbox, especially when the full red treatment is like a matador and this Corvette is your charging bull.
The engine is the original numbers matching L79 327 cubic-inch V8. It looks fantastic in the engine bay with all the attractive and bright elements like the air cleaner, valve covers, alternator and other accessories. But more than just look great, there's extra power lurking in the V8 thanks to upgrades such as the Weiand intake and Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor. There are some out there who need big blocks, but for true drivers of vintage sports cars, this is the one to have. It will idle all day in traffic and not foul its plugs; it's considerably easier on gas; and if you've ever driven one, you know the smooth power delivery comes from revving this one up. And you truly get this full control over the V8 thanks to the four-speed manual gearbox. Just as it was true in '68, this Corvette can still live up to its reputation as America's sports car with components like a fully independent suspension, power steering, and four-wheel disc brakes. Auction ended in July, 2016.
