Car history:
2) Having been in this business for a few years now, we've seen a few trends come and go. But one thing that remains constant year-in and year-out is that red Corvettes always find new homes. This 1968 Corvette convertible is one that will surely sell quickly and easily by virtue of three things: awesome red paint, a manual transmission, and a very reasonable price. The arrival of the all-new Stingray in 1968 must have turned the automotive world on its ear, and even today they are some of the most iconic and recognizable cars ever built. Corvette enthusiasts seem to prefer these early models with their chrome bumpers, and it's easy to see why. Code 974 Rally Red is what this car wore originally, now rendered in modern paint, so it looks vivid and bright with an impressive shine that no production car in 1968 could offer. The fit of the doors, hood, and headlights suggests that this car has never required major surgery and that someone spent a lot of time getting everything just right. And, of course, those chrome bumpers offer a classic look that neatly blends the cutting-edge design with old-school sports car fashion. The only notable exterior modification are the taillight lenses, which are interesting convex units that give it a slightly custom look, but these could easily be swapped for a set of originals in about 10 minutes. The trim tag says the interior is STD but it's anything but standard. The original vinyl has been replaced by black leather, which isn't technically correct but sure looks good with an inviting, lived-in look that's ideal for a vintage 'Vette. Correct door panels, recent carpets, and other soft parts give it an all-of-a-piece feel inside, but you'll never hesitate to jump in and hit the road. The most important thing in the cockpit might be that chrome shifter linked to a 4-speed manual transmission, the essence of Corvette motoring, and with an AM/FM/cassette stereo, it's also a nice place to just cruise. Corvette-logo floor mats protect the carpets, the steering wheel has a racy 3-spoke design, and all the gauges are in good order with original markings. The black vinyl top is brand new, so it fits well and folds easily without a fight, and even though you'll only use it for emergencies, it looks great when it's up. The engine is a great-running 327 cubic inch small block that delivers the spirited performance Corvettes made famous. It's not a thundering big block, but rather a snappy car that feels agile on the road thanks to less weight over the front end and if you like to drive, the upgrades make it reliable. You'll also note a set of aftermarket valve covers and fresh Chevy Orange paint on the block, so while it isn't 100 per cent correct under the hood, it's also nothing to be ashamed of. The chrome air cleaner looks new and wears reproduction decals, and everything is in good order, so turn the key, get in, and have an adventure. Underneath there are no stories, with clean floors and a fresh dual exhaust system that sounds great barking through the gears, and there are recent shocks at all four corners. Correct Rally wheels with 245/60/15 BFGoodrich T/A radials give it a sporty look that puts lots of rubber on the road. You'll be hard-pressed to find a cleaner chrome-bumper C3 for less cash, and this one offers the advantage of a manual gearbox and an awesome look. Color codes from the trim plate. Assembly date is K27. 71,545 miles from the odometer. $33,995. March 28, 2014. $26,995 on November 22, 2014.
