Car history:
1968 Corvette Coupe in Cordovan Maroon (988) with black vinyl interior. 1968 Coupes accounted for only 9,936 out of a total of 28,566 produced, with only 1,155 painted in Cordovan Maroon. The car is equipped with a 427CI/390HP numbers matching engine with a Turbo-Hydra-Matic transmission, manual brakes, power steering, tinted glass, and PO1 wheel covers. If you consider that only 5,063 Corvettes were produced with automatic transmissions, and only 1/3 of all 1968 Corvettes were coupes, painted in the 2nd rarest color (Black was the rarest that year), this makes this Corvette pretty unique. I have owned this car for the last 4 years, but have driven it sparingly and feel it is time to pass it along to another Corvette enthusiast. The car has 92,000 miles and was restored approximately 20 years ago. It received an NCRS 2nd Flight award in 1989, and the car is now a very good driver quality vehicle with a just a few chips in the paint from driving over the years. The frame, body, and drive train are in excellent shape and I would not hesitate to drive this car cross-country. Trim Tag: STD 988 = Black Standard Vinyl Interior, Cordovan Maroon, I18 = Assembly Date April 18th, Drive Train: 427CI/390HP (L-36) mated to a TH400 A/T (M-40). Numbers matching engine and rear end. No tank sticker or purchase documents for this car. 427 ID Stamp Pad: 18S416367 TO411IQ. TO411IQ: TOnowanda Foundry, Build Date 411 (April 11th) IQ 427/390HP Automatic Trans. Block Casting: 3935439 = 427CI 390, 400, 430, & 430HP Engines. Intake Manifold: Winters Aluminum ID# 3937793. Exhaust Manifolds: Drivers Side 3880827 LH2 GM. Passenger Side 3880828 RH2 GM. Heads: Drivers Side 3917215. Passenger Side 3917215. Rear End: 1AW41568W; 1 = 1st Shift, AW = 3.08 Ratio HD/Posi for 427CI Engine, 41568 = Build date of 4/15/1968, W = Winters (Posi Source). Option List: A01 - Soft Ray Tinted Glass, A85 - Shoulder Belts, G81 - Posi Traction Rear Axle, L36 - 427/390HP Turbo - Fire V8, M40 - Turbo - Hydra - Matic Transmission, N40 - Power Steering, P01 - Bright Metal Wheel Covers, PT6 - Red Stripe Tires F70 x 15 Nylon Bias Ply.
Body: All body panels fit correctly, doors aligned properly, and as stated above, the paint is driver quality with a few rock chips. The car was painted over 20 years ago and it still shows very well, has a nice finish to it and no bubbles present. I would call the paint job a '5 footer'. Chrome is in very good to excellent condition.
Frame: Very solid and clean. No rust or repairs. Birdcage is solid.
Interior: Very nice. No rips or tears in the interior. Dash has no cracks or fading, same for the door panels. Carpet on the driver's side shows some wear, but not bad. The rest of the carpeting in the interior is very good to excellent. All gauges work, fiber optics work with the exception of the license plate light. Vacuum headlight doors and wiper door and wipers work as they should. One of the previous owners installed an aftermarket radio. I have replaced any worn out or used up interior pieces with NOS or reproduction parts and saved anything I replaced.
Other Details: I replaced the radiator with a DeWitts radiator (Still have the old radiator) due to a pinhole leak in the fall of 2007. The rear trailing arms were replaced with rebuilt units from Bair's in the spring of 2008, along with a 9 leaf spring (Still have the original 7 leaf spring) for a softer ride, replaced all 4 brake calipers, front and rear brake lines, new parking brake cable, replaced all of the rubber bushings and had a 4 wheel alignment done, checked the differential for wear (OK) and then completely cleaned/detailed the undercarriage. The car rides on the correct rims for 1968, which are hard to find. I have receipts from one of the previous owners who had the lower control arm bushings and pins replaced at 85,300 miles and the engine was overhauled at the same time.
Finally: The car is missing the following items: Original carburetor, the complete AIR pump system, original vacuum actuator (Has 69 - 72 unit installed), original radio (Aftermarket radio installed and working), master cylinder and alternator. Replacing these items would make it more correct for a 1968 Corvette. Although it is not a 100% NCRS correct car, it has the potential to be a NCRS Top Flight candidate. This is an excellent driver quality car you can enjoy now and not a trailer queen that you will never drive. The car runs and looks like it should and you will not be disappointed when you see it. I am sure I have overlooked a few things, so feel free to ask any questions you may have by calling PST. 92,223 miles from the odometer. August 3, 2010.
