| Car history: |
One Saturday I was sitting down to a large Cicero pizza with Elaine and mindlessly and rather rudely began scrolling through the endless cars for sale ads. I stopped on an ad that simply stated “Corvette for Sale.” Most car buffs have heard the urban legend of the scorned wife selling the prize car of the soon to be ex-husband that ran off with the secretary. Elaine and I would soon learn that this was an off shoot of that scenario.
After making hasty arrangement to meet up a short time later we turned onto a one lane dead end road. Much to our astonishment we found a decent ’79 vette stashed in the last car port amid a jumble of mixed clutter. The vette was surprising shiny although it was speckled with sap on the driver’s side door. No sooner had we gotten out of our car when 2 German Shepherds began yapping at us incessantly, alerting the residents.
A man with long flowing black hair strode up the lane with a confident gait. He introduced himself to me and began to show us the car. It was blocked in by a Jacuzzi and miscellaneous building materials. The vette was sitting on a jack stand as a result of a rear tire blow out. The tattered original tire and rim was laying next to the sports car. I had seen enough and quickly struck a deal. Immediately after, I called Tow Mario to assist in the pull out.
The man’s beautiful lady friend turned up and it was apparent they were in love. She began to explain that the building stuff belonged to her ex-dude and the vette belonged to the previous owner of the brown shingle she had purchased 6 years ago. They were both energized by the prospect of cleaning out the past and moving forward with the future. Soon the vette was cleared out of the car port and they embraced each other and the new space created by the vette’s departure.
Tow Mario showed up with his teenaged son and they were both impressed with my purchase. The handsome man’s ladyfriend told me that the vette had belong to the owner of the local watering hole. It was a fabulous bar and the vette suited his flamboyant lifestyle well. He apparently was popular with the locals and was accompanied by a young beauty wherever the vette went.
Upon returning home, Russell and I began inspecting my purchase. The Jacuzzi had left a small impression on the driver’s side of the nose. The driver’s door had some cricks and cracks and a 3 x 2 inch section missing from low on the corner. The piece turned up in one of the rear compartments. The driver’s side rear quarter had a small hit like someone beaned it with a softball. The passenger side was really clean except for up by the front gill. It looked like something had hooked it a little bit.
I sat in the vette and looked toward the sky. The mirrored t-tops were transparent from inside! The driver’s side was cracked a little however, and Russell pulled them off to reveal wonderful chrome underneath. It was a whole new car with the tops off and I felt really macho sitting in it with a big grin on my face. The interior was amazingly original, no silly stereo had been hacked in it and every piece was accounted for. The rear carpeted area was nice and clean and I loved the big rear window which made it seem very spacious. I popped the hood and Russ began to inspect the engine.
It was the same here. No extraneous wiring from after market bolt ons – quadrajet carb was in place, filters and fluids all correctly installed and topped off. We instantly called Tom the mobile locksmith and scheduled a key making appointment. After installing a battery we ran through the lights and gauges and it was really gratifying that they all worked, including the stereo.
Russell and I moved to the rear wheel and began to hypothesize on what lead the vette to lay dormant in the carport all these years. The wheel bearing had blown out and a strut piece had broken. The e-brake cable and the brake line had been severed. This area of the car was going to need some attention before the vette was road worthy again. Nothing a good set of tools and a little know how couldn’t fix.
So here it is, a ’79 vette, last year before the 80’s began all disco and glam. The vette still maintains its bulbous, macho, muscle car lines. Root beer brown with tan interior, I wonder how many were made in this color combination. It’s a classic now and forever. Thank you for reading and appreciating this automobile.
