Car history:
1968 Big Block 427 Corvette Stingray 4-Speed! Only 47,565 ACTUAL ORIGINAL MILES. A good friend of mine who has lovingly owned this BEAUTY for the last 18+ years. He told me that he just doesn't have much spare time anymore and the car sits in his garage most of the time. He is in his late fifties and this is his pride and joy !! I can't imagine finding another 1968 Corvette BIG BLOCK Stingray that has been babied like this one. I was very impressed how well the car handles and how smooth and POWERFULL it is. This is a DRY - SOLID - Idaho high mountain desert western vehicle. The GROUND POUNDING -ORIGINAL - NUMBERS MATCHING - BIG BLOCK (390 HP) 427 CID V8 motor is very responsive and the acceleration and power this car has is hard to describe. Originally purchased from a dealership in Pomona California August of 1968. In Late 1971 or early 1972 the car was being driven down a narrow mountain road in California and hit a rock that put a hole in the oil pan. The car was put in storage for approximately 16 years at the small business that the original owner managed in Pomona. The business had developed and produced digital cattle thermometers that are used to determine the timing for artificial insemination of cattle. Previous to managing this business the original owner was an aerospace engineer. The original owner then died of brain cancer and the car became an asset of the small business that he had managed. The owner of the business was living in Carson City, Nevada and decided to move the business from Pomona to San Luis Obispo. In turn he needed to remove the Corvette from the old business location. His neighbor was a collector of classic Corvettes so he offered to move the vet to Carson City where the motor was rebuilt, the car cleaned and in turn put back on the road. The vet was moved to Carson city in 1987. The motor was bored .30 over, ported, and rebuilt with all new parts. It was re-licensed 1/04/89 at a mileage of 39,270. When the present owner bought the vet in December of 1992. The previous owner was 82 at that time. He had kept the vet in a heated garage along with his 1952 Jag that he had completely restored. When the car was transported to Boise Idaho in March of 1993, it had 40,373 miles on it. The car has been stored in climate controlled storage while in Idaho. The car’s vin number is 194378S416782. The car was built in Saint Louis on April 22nd. A chalk mark under the rear window storage tray shows 4/18/1968 for the date that the body shell was constructed. On 8/21/98 the present owner attended the National Corvette Restoration Society vet show in Sun Valley, Idaho. At the show he contacted one of the officials to inspect the car for potential entry in future survivor judging events. The official gave a written recommendation for the car to be entered in the next show that the National Corvette Restoration society had in Idaho. The owner purchased a Corvette Judging Reference Manual to see how the car compared to criteria in the manual. Some of the results were as follows. This vet was the 16,782nd one built. After serial number 13,723 to the end of the model year, the upper alarm light is "Door Ajar" and the lower is "Wiper Aerate". Head light shields are intact and the original semi gloss black plastic. Headlamps are all T-3. Body and Trim tag shows 402 black leather, and 972 paint, Polar white and I22 as a build date that is April 22nd. The 1968 was the only year that had a telescopic only steering column with a outer ring around the horn used to lock it into the desired height. There are two black vinyl storage bags for the T-tops. The bags have the manufacturer’s logo and are date stamped. The date stamp is January of 1968. Both 1968 and 1969 bags used "Velcro" strips for strap closure of the flap. The LOF Safety Plate code on the windshield is XX to designate the manufacture date of February of 68 and the code on the side glass is LX indicating that is was manufactured March of 68. Having the correct glass amounts to 45 points awarded for originality. The outside rear view mirror has a 2 DMI-8 stamp that means it was manufactured February 1968. The casting number on the engine, 3935439 was for engines built from late 1968 to mid January 1969 have this casting number. The identification stamp of TO416IL means that the engine was built in Tonawanda April 16th and was a 390 hp 427 4 speed quadrajet. The four digit code on the quadrajet is 0888. They use the Julian calendar dates so it was built March of 68. The intake manifold number is 3937793 that was used after mid March 68. The distributor number is 1111293. The alternator date code is 8 D5 which is April 68. The alternator number is 1100693, 37 amps base unit, 300 thru 400 HP. The exhaust manifold casting numbers are 3880827 and 3880828 used on 68 and 69 vets. The master cylinder is not original. Headlight actuators work like new which is unusual for a Vet this old. The starter date code is 8 D3 that is for April 68. The emissions system is still functional and hard to find since this was a California car. A.I.R. hose numbers and codes are 3925532 for the right and 3921901 for all 427’s and 69 L88’s. The differential has a red plastic lubricant warning tag on the drain plug. The tag reads "Positraction Diff. Lubricant Only". The spare tire is the original and has the lock with the rubber form fitted boot. There are 105 pages in the Judging Manual and this car would score very high when compared to the standards in the manual. The 1968-1969 Corvette Judging Manual along with Corvette Judging Reference Manual is included. The front brake calipers were recently replace and have less than 500 miles on them and the rear brake calipers have approximately 2000 miles since they were replaced. The owner’s manual along with the original sales brochure for 1968 Corvettes is included. This car is a survivor and has a great history. Being original is a rarity and now you can carry on the history of a great car. The overall cosmetic impression of this car is fantastic ! The EYE POPPING BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL white exterior paint (YES THATS NOT A MISPRINT - ORIGINAL PAINT !!) is VERY NICE with only a few imperfections but is still bright and shiny and looks BEAUTIFUL as you can see in the picture above and the 100 ADDITIONAL PICTURES BELOW. The Original black upholstery is also VERY NICE. The BF Goodrich radial T/A tires and stock rally rims with trim-rings and center caps are the finishing touch to this stock collector Corvette and they are in nice shape. The interior is in very nice shape and is ALL ORIGINAL. 47,565 miles from the odometer. Color codes form the trim plate. Assembly date is I22. May 29, 2011.
