Car history: |
2) THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE BEAUTIFUL 1972 WAR BONNET YELLOW BIG BLOCK CORVETTE COUPE. THIS CAR WAS ORDERED A LITTLE DIFFERENT THEN MOST 72/S WITH NO POWER STEERING, POWER BRAKES OR A-C. THIS CAR WAS RESTORED TO BE EXACTLY AS IT LEFT THE SHOWROOM RIGHT DOWN TO THE BLACK WALL TIGER PAW TIRES. THE RESTORATION WAS STARTED MAY OF 2007 AND COMPLETED MAY OF 2008 AND A COMPLETE CHECK UP IN JULY OF 2009. THIS CAR NEEDS NOTHING. THE UNDER SIDE LOOKS AS NICE AS THE REST OF IT. THE RESTORATION WAS DONE BY LONG'S CORVETTES PROSPECT HILL N.C. THEY DO A FINE JOB ON CHROME BUMPER CORVETTES. IT RUNS, DRIVES AND STOPS PERFECTLY. THIS IS A SHOW QUALITY CORVETTE. 54,653 miles from the odometer. . May 20, 2010. 1) Why 1972: I purchased this car after some extensive research on the topic and owning another 1972 corvette (350 with a/c) in the nice but ubiquitous Mille Milglia Red. It was like most other cars out there as it was in driver condition. The A/C although there did not work (like most A/C cars). I found over time these older A/C systems either keep breaking down or never work very well. I was OK without the A/C. I just wanted the POWER of a 454. I wanted something different that really stood out and "popped". I like 1972 cars for several reasons: 1- They cost a little less but has all the awesome styling elements. It was the last year of the metal bumper cars (front and back) and removable rear window. 2- The cars were designed to run on unleaded gas and run better on "pump gas" than most other muscle cars. 3-The Horse Power rating is deceptive and this 454 car has a monstrous 455 foot pounds of torque. The horse power ratings were lowered to play games with the insurance companies (net vs gross hp). About the car: I found this car when I was looking for a solid vehicle that was free of rust and found this car to be originally from NC (where I am from) and it had documents including the Bill of Sale and Title paperwork supporting that it was originally sold in Winston Salem, NC in 1972 and lived its life here. I was also looking for a car that was not a bunch of cars put together (and as you can see from the pictures the gaps are factory quality). I got to drive the car before my purchase and restoration and it drives very tight and the odometer and title reflect 54,000 original miles and it is very believable. Really a car with 54,000 miles should only need a frame up/refresh, not need a frame off restoration unless it is a rust bucket, or has been hit or it is actually 154,000 or 254,000 or more. And believe me, those cars are out there. The block is correct for the car and a GM warranty replacement block coded engine that has been replaced in the life of the car. I have read (and seen) so many cars with numbers being falsified and would rather have a GM replacement coded block than a mystery engine or a fake numbers car that I overpayed for. Based on how it was ordered and the low miles we believe it was purchased for the 1/4 mile. No A/C, No Power steering or brakes to rob power. Hence the replacement block. Probably blew the original engine. I wanted a car restored to original and took the time to research the car and chose the correct color both interior and exterior as well. I wanted the details to be correct and spent alot of time getting it right (GM hoses, etc). And I wanted a credible restoration shop to do the work and I found one that does only corvettes and specializes in 1969-1972 models. I wanted a car that was reliable and we went through everything. As a result, I created a car that can be driven anywhere that looks awesome. I have truly enjoyed this car and have caught myself smiling many times as I drive down the road because it drives so well. I get alot of thumbs up and a lot of questions while pumping gas. This car was only driven on sunny days= so lets go as long as the sun is shining. Engine: Detailed engine compartment with rebuilt engine with about 500 miles on engine. Carburator is a rebuilt Rockchester Quadrajet. Engine does not blow smoke. Does not ping or tap. Starts consistently. Runs and accelerates smoothly and will throw you back in the seat when you press down on the gas with a deep rumble. Correct stickers and placement. Correct original air cleaner and valve covers. GM factory hoses. No leaks. Adult driven regularly and maintained properly. Exhaust and manifolds are correct and powder coated. Correct 2 1/2 inch exhaust with correct mufflers. Correct braided wires and ignition shielding (for better radio sound quality). Correct radiator with no leaks. Car operating temperature is about 175-180 F (doesn't run too hot) even in the mid summer here in North Carolina. Vacuum system works. Headlights come up properly as do hidden wipers. Wipers work properly. New fan belts. Original alternator (or period correct). Engine bay is very nice. Transmission: Turbo hydromatic. Shifts gears smoothly without hesitation. No leaks. Original brake reservoir with correct silver cover. Disc brakes in all corners and brakes are new with new lines and are disc in all 4 corners. Under the car clean, tidy and correct. Gas tank is new as are gas lines for safety. Electrical system has no issues. All interior lights work as to all exterior lights with new bulbs. Exterior: Paint is a base coat/clear coat DuPont and almost glows. It is correct to the car trim tag data plate and is called War Bonnet Yellow (named after the headgear of the American Indian). The car has original seams on the fenders. No spidering of the paint or cracking. There are a few small imperfections that I would have to point out located behind driver door (not visible in the photographs). Paint is very nice 9/10. All new rubber around doors, windows etc. Side window glass is correct Astro ventilation original. Windshield has a very light mark on it I would have to point out on the drivers side and likely original. Rear window is very nice. Chrome has all been redone with detail work around the "eggcrate" behind the front wheels under the "Stingray" logo. There are some original pieces around the T-top and front windows that are original and very nice. You will see many cars with alot of overspray of the paint and lousy chrome. This car was stripped of all paint (not a re-spray) and all parts and interior removed to make it look like a factory paint job, not a 20 footer. Photos of the restoration are available but are not digital. If you come to see the car or buy the car, I have them with a book of documents on the car. Gaps are very nice. Interior: Correct to the trim tag data plate saddle interior. Correct electric (not quartz) clock. New lenses for the gauges. All gauges work. Original AM/FM radio works. Fan works. Heat works and new heater core. All switches work. All new interior. There are a few minor things that could be done to make it even more perfect but then you wouldn't want to drive it. New floor mats. Correct carpet for the deluxe interior. Wheels and tires: Correct original date coded Rally Rims (not reproductions) with New trim rings and center caps on blackwall radial tires (with original spare). Tires could be changed to white letter radials or bias ply etc as per your preference but this is how it was delivered from the factory and that is how I wanted to keep it looking. Blackwall tires. Color codes from the trim plate. Built date is I21. 54,551 miles from the odometer. April 4, 2010. |
