Lot T188
Serial number 00007, this 1969 Chevrolet Corvette convertible pilot car was recently
cosmetically refreshed by Bodyworks, a division of Hickman Automotive Group in
St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada. Highlighted by its matching-numbers L68 Tri
Power 427/400 HP big-block V-8 and 4-speed manual transmission, it also incorporates
4-wheel power disc brakes, tilt steering and the original AM/FM radio. In its second
year of production, the C3 Corvette received numerous subtle but important changes
meant to address concerns raised over the 1968 model year by both customers
and the automotive press. The most obvious exterior changes were the return of
the Stingray body script, new door handles, integrated backup lights and wider
wheels and tires for improved handling. Interior changes were more significant,
and included a smaller-diameter steering wheel, increased elbow room, a relocated
ignition switch with steering column lock, a three-section map pocket added to
compensate for the lack of a glove box, and a headlight-position warning light.
These and other changes are all found in this rare early pilot-production convertible.
According to the cars production date code A22, it was produced on August 22,
1968 and is the earliest 1969 production Corvette seen by noted expert and author
Rick Bizzoco, author of The 1969 Corvette Guide Book. One of the earliest-known
Corvettes produced with factory side exhaust, it features new Monza Red paint,
new carpet, cushions and leather seat covers, a correct date-coded white soft top
and new chromed side pipes, air cleaner and valve covers. The restoration also
focused on using NOS pieces wherever possible, including T3 headlights and NOS
marker lamps, emblems, door handles and drivers mirror and Rally wheels fitted
with NOS trim rings and Firestone RWL bias-ply tires.
