| Car history: |
Since I don't have the time to drive and appreciate this car as much as I would like, I thought I would let someone else have the opportunity.
I have a rare Early 1976 L-82 Corvette with manual transmission. You may say what makes this car so rare considering 1976 was a year when they made the most Corvettes. Well below I have listed the options this car has along with the rarity of the option.
VIN: 1Z37X6S406741 Place 5 is X which shows it is an original L-82. The last 5 numbers is 06741 which means it was 6,741 off the production line.

As far as the transmission goes there is a lot of false information by people selling their Corvettes. The production numbers say there are 2,088 Corvettes with the close ratio manual transmission, so they believe that if their car has a manual transmission it is one of those 2,088. This is not correct. Corvettes had both a wide ratio and a close ratio transmission for 1976. The close ratio was only available with the L-82 upgrade. The wide ratio was available in both. Since there is not information about the exact number of wide ratio transmissions that went into the L-82 models I am going to do a little quick math.
Amount of L-82 = 5,720 Amount of close ratio manual transmissions = 2,088 Subtract the 2 and you get there are 3,632 L-82 models left with the wide ratio manual transmission or the automatic transmission.
Total amount of Corvettes = 46,558 Amount of close ratio manual transmissions = 2,088 Subtract the 2 and you get that there are 44,470 left for wide ratio manual transmission or the automatic transmissions. Amount of automatic transmission = 36,625 That is 82.36% of what is left are automatic transmissions and 17.64% is the wide ratio manual transmission.
Now multiply the 3,632 by the 17.64% that are wide ratio and you get 641 Corvettes with an L-82 engine and the wide ratio manual transmission. Now take into account how many of those were made during the Early 1976 production (yes there are differences), how many are still around after 33 years, and how many of them are still numbers matching?
A little more about the car. The car has just over 100,000 miles. Engine was pulled a little over 3,000 miles ago and completely disassembled and checked out. Engine was rebuilt without boring the cylinder because they were not that far out. In fact the original cross hatching on the cylinder walls was still visible. Engine was cleaned and re-assembled including a complete valve job, new water pump, new fuel pump, new oil pump. Engine was upgraded with new cam, hydraulic lifters, push rods, and roller tip rockers. Since the engine was out it seemed like the perfect time to rebuild the clutch so that was done too. After all this work was done I had to get an emission test done to renew my plates. I have a copy of that report I can show you.
I have since had a new exhaust installed. I replaced the old one that went from the headers, through one converter, then back out through 2 mufflers. Now it comes out of the headers as a full true dual exhaust with no converters.
This is a good running car that still has glossy paint. I take the car on a couple of 300 mile round trips to Wisconsin a year without problems.
More pictures and a walk around video with the car running is available if needed. Paint is glossy but does show some typical fiberglass spider-webbing. |
