Car history:
Exceptionally Nice Daytona Yellow 1969 Corvette ZL-1 Re-Creation. I have owned this car for over 25 years. It started its life as a 390 HP Daytona Yellow Coupe With Black Int and 4spd. It was purchased from a Chevrolet Dealership 10 miles from Baldwin Motion N.Y. (Store number 001 in 1968.) According to the original owner, the car was taken to Baldwin Motion for Modifications with only a few miles on it. Baldwin Motion could not always get cars from GM and did source them from other dealerships. In the 80's I found the car in N.J. where it had been sitting inside for quite a few years with a blown "over the counter" GM Aluminum BB in it. The odometer read around 40,000. I installed a 454 and drove it for a few years. I moved to San Diego and left the car sitting back east. Technically this car is not a "Baldwin Motion" car as, according to Baldwin Motion, it was probably brought to Baldwin by its owner when new and not delivered to Baldwin directly from GM for modification. See the photo of this actual car 35+ years ago. In the early 1990's, I shipped the car out to Ca. Shortly thereafter, I ran into Covette legend Zora Duntov. I mentioned to him that I didn't like the Motion Drag Race look of the car. He suggested that I should make it a road racer as the car already had real GM/ZL-1/L-88 road race fenders on it. He recommended Dick Guldstrand's shop, in L.A., as THE BEST in the business. Eventually I stripped the car down to the frame and started a ten year restoration. The tank sticker was gone, but we found another build sheet stuffed in the frame. We fully welded and gusseted the entire frame per the official GM Performance Manual. It was then powdercoated. The accident free body received a proper restoration and paint while on a frame dolly.
Beautifully restored, the car arrived a Dick Guldstrand's Performance Corvette Shop in 2007. Dick Guldstrand, and his team of Corvette experts installed: a Limited Edition (194 of 200) GM ZL-1 Engine, Suspension, Steering, Brakes, Custom Made Vintage Style Steel Wheels (16X10 & 16X12) with Goodyear Slicks, Flywheel, Clutch, Pressure Plate, Fresh 3:55 Posi. Clutches, Power Rack and Pinion using only GM Parts, Hi Performance Hydraulic Pump, 4 Point Rollbar, (welded to the frame), Ultra Rare 200 MPH Speedo, Fuel Injection, One of a kind (we made it) custom black Carbon Fiber L-88 intake base, and custom Stainless Steel thermally coated headers. Dick and I had discussed doing a series of these cars based on the Garner A.I.R Corvette's that Dick Raced in the 60's. If the plan came together, this car was to be the Prototype Show Car. The slow economy has derailed this plan for me. The thought was to have a car that you could reliably drive everyday with Street Tires, Fuel Injection, Reasonable Compression Ratio, drive it to the track and have a seriously fast vintage looking race car! Original Guldstrand Prepared /A.I.R. cars have sold for over $600,000. Dicks ORIGINAL Race Cars are highly sought after due to his Engineering Know How, Driving Skills, and Vehicle Race History. The idea behind this Corvette was to offer all the looks and power of the original cars but with better driveability, engine life and a MUCH lower purchase price. I have only put a few hundred miles on the Engine. It runs great. I have driven it to LA for the Beverly Hills-Rodeo Drive Concour and other events. Runs easily at 180 Degrees and 3:55 rear makes it a great highway cruiser. The car has no wipers or radio and it has a headlight vacuum hose off somewhere. Headlights go up just fine, but need direct vacuum. No spare tire or related hardware. Heater not hooked up. All glass is new but the rear window. It has some scratches. The paint is excellent with only minor tiny chips or imperfections. Absolutely only a few. Definitely show quality but can be driven and enjoyed. The interior and dash are excellent. Dash top is original and perfect. Drivers door panel is original and has a couple of holes in it. Easy replaced or repaired. Not really noticeable. Aluminum door sills are original and show wear. Carpet has been replaced. Seats have been re-done. 2 of the rear package shelf doors were taken off, for good before I purchased the car and I never replaced them. The Battery compartment door is there and looks good. The car was in such good shape that we re-used most of the parts so expect typical wear for a 35 year old car that has been kept inside and VERY well cared for its entire life. The ZL-1 Engine installed in the car is the Hi-Performance factory Solid Roller Cam Motor and NOT the lower horsepower Aluminum 427 currently available. This is the only GM engine issued from the factory with the "ZL-1" designation on the valve covers. According to GM, it will never be produced in this configuration again. If the car bids above $100,000, I will dig a substantial pile of extra parts out of storage and provide them to the new owner. Parts off of the aluminum engine that was in the car. Exact Date Matched Winters Aluminum heads, Motion-Edelbrock intake, Rare Holley Three Barrel 850cfm Carb., Factory Chrome Valve Covers, Factory Chrome ignition cover (a little rusty), Factory Metal, (not Fiberglass) side-pipes presumed to be added at Motion, a 4:11 rear, Original Steel Leaf Spring, control arms, trailing arms, spindles, Calipers, Fan shroud etc. Sorry, I left the original Mag wheels back east in the 1980's. The mirror on the car is correct from Motion. I have the passenger side mirror. I was going to use a taller road race mirror, but I had not found one I liked. As well I will include a new set of Guldstrand L-88 Headlight Assemblies, inner housing, and rare original, headlight mounting hardware. This car is ready for any magazine. It is a Unique Car that will Wow! anyone who sees it. As well, It will certainly appreciate in Value over time. $65,000. Color codes from the trim plate. Built date is G03. March 30, 2009.
