05/17/2014 If you are looking for an affordable hobby car, you really should spend some time with the C3 Corvettes. Nothing's more recognizable on the street and cars like this low-mileage 1977 'Vette offer perhaps the biggest bang for the buck in the motoring universe. Great looks, plenty of performance, and luxury that makes it easy to drive every day, this is a fast, fun hobby car that won't clean out your bank account. The data tag says this one was originally code 80 Corvette Tan, which is probably just as dull as it sounds, even by 1970s standards. But Classic White, on the other hand, is a timeless look that will never go out of style and gives the Corvette a zoomy look without being too flashy. As a low-mile car, this one has obviously led a good life and the repaint has a decent shine that looks right on a car approaching its 40th birthday. 1977 was the last year of those dramatic C-pillar flying buttresses, and with the repaint, they gave the car a very nice all-of-a-piece look that was strangely absent from most of the factory paint jobs where slightly mismatched colors were common. In fact, check out how well the tail piece fits, the great gaps on the doors, and the thoroughness of the paint job, which successfully erases almost all traces of the original tan. It shouldn't be a surprise that the code 692 brown leather interior is in great shape after just 45,578 miles. With an appealing broken-in look that isn't worn out or beat up, the stock leather seats remain inviting and comfortable. The carpets are recent, so the interior looks tidy and clean, with original door panels that don't show the usual cracks and fading that inevitably come from use. Options include A/C, power windows, a tilt steering column, and cruise control, making this a 'Vette you can drive anywhere without feeling like you're in a vintage car. The factory AM/FM stereo head unit remains in the center stack and still sounds decent, although when you pull the T-tops off, you won't be worrying about what's on the radio. And speaking of the T-tops, they stow neatly in original storage bags that help protect the finish. Chevy's venerable L48 350 cubic inch engine provides an energetic V8 experience thanks to 270 pounds of torque on tap. This is the car's original, numbers-matching mill and given the low mileage, it has never needed major internal work. Just last year the valve seals were replaced, so it doesn't smoke and runs quite well. The engine bay looks tidy and age-appropriate, with corporate turquoise engine enamel and a bright air cleaner up top, while original cast iron exhaust manifolds feed a free-flowing dual system with Flowmaster mufflers. A TH350 3-speed automatic always seems to be in the right gear for maximum thrust and by 1977, GM engineers had given the 'Vette a suspension that feels competent but doesn't beat you up. Classic Rally wheels look fantastic and are wrapped in 225/70/15 Goodyear Eagle radials at all four corners.
