Car history:
2) Original All Numbers Matching 350/200 4 Speed Manual. Equipped at the factory with Power Steering, Power Brakes, Air Conditioning (compressor presently removed and not included) and Deluxe Interior including Power Windows and Tilt Telescoping Steering Wheel. I can testify that it is a great running and driving car because I personally took delivery of it in South Florida and drove it 800 miles back to North Carolina in just 12 hours. I cruised it like I would a brand new Vette at 70 to 75 mph all the way. The car performed beautifully. The car runs smooth and tracks straight as an arrow. No front end shimmy, no wierd vibrations or noises. The engine runs at 180 to 185 degrees and consistently holds strong oil pressure. The factory original tachometer registers 2,800 rpm @ 70 mph. The factory original speedometer reads precisely the same speed as my TomTom GPS. I believe the 95,500 miles shown on the odometer to be correct but obviously cannot guarantee it. All the original gauges work with the possible exception of the temp gauge. An aftermarket probe style temp gauge (very accurate) is in use, mounted under the dash on the driver's side and is wired to the light switch for dimming/brightening along with the other dash gauge lights. Amazingly, the clock works too and actually keeps perfect time. It’s obvious some significant bucks have been spent not long ago. I have a stack of receipts for parts since 2006 including a new clutch. While I don't have specific invoices for an engine build it is very obvious the engine has been rebuilt, and rebuilt well. The engine was serviced prior to my departure. After 800 miles the oil looked as fresh as when I began and not a drop had been burned. When I got home I parked the car in my garage. After two days there was not a drop of oil, grease, power steering fluid or coolant on the floor. The drivetrain in this car is tight and right. And, it is complimented by the most rust free frame and undercarriage that I have seen in a long, long time. This car can be enjoyed and admired with the present driver quality paint (I got a wave and thumbs up about every 10 miles on that 800 mile trip home). It has scratches, dings and a few bubbles in the paint (not the fiberglass) and a small chunk out of the left rear facia (easily repaired. shown in photos). Painting the car back to its original factory color, Elkhart Green Metallic, would make it outstanding and increase its worth considerably. At the Mecum auction in Kansas City earlier this month a '72 Survivor 350/200 Automatic Coupe bid to $22,000 and didn't meet reserve. The interior is in very good condition overall. It could just use some spiffing. The bottom seat cushion on the drivers side has a few holes in a seam, there is a crack in the speaker perforations on the passenger side of the dash and the tops of the window pillar trim covers are beat up where they come in contact with the T-Top latches (very common). The carpet is quite acceptable but new carpet and correct floor mats would really make it look fresh. Although the heavy work has already been done you’ll have some mechanical work to do too. The headlights presently need to be opened manually and the windshield wiper door is also not operating via its vacuum system. If you want A/C you will have to install a compressor. When the engine was rebuilt the engine was not reconnected to the heater. That was probably done because heat in Florida isn't necessary but it also leaves open the question of the condition of the heater core. And, there will be other incidental assorted things you will find to do like replacing the aftermarket big block hood if you want it to be 100% factory. All part of taking a classic chrome bumper C-3 in good condition over all and making it even better. In photos showing the left side of the car you will notice the left rear red marker light lens is missing. It has since been replaced with a new assembly. Also, the stainless steel trim piece for the wiper door was not on during the photo shoot. I just got a new set of clips to put it back on. Trim Tag Reads: Chevrolet J26 (Built May 26, 1972). Trim 421 (Saddle Leather Interior) 946 Paint (Elkhart Green Metallic). Engine Number: V0522CKW (Flint Plant, May 1972, 350 cu. in. 200 hp. Accompanied by the last 6 digits of the VIN: 522409. Transmission Number: P2E19A (Muncie 2:52:1Wide Ratio 4 Speed built May 19th 1972). Trans also stamped 128522409. The underlined being the last 6 digits being of the VIN. Rear Axle Number: LRW137E2 (3:36 Posi-traction built during the second shift at the Warren Plant on May 17th 1972). ENGINE: I’d bet my left leg (I bet my 800 mile drive home and that convinced me) that this engine has been recently very well rebuilt. I have no idea what’s inside. It does not appear to be anything other than strong stock. I put 93 octane gas in it. It is externally equipped with: New Edelbrock Performer Carb with Electric Choke (see photos). New Edelbrock Performer Aluminum Manifold. New Stock Exhaust Manifolds (nice touch vs Headers on a #’s Matching car). New HEI Electronic Distributor with Cable Tachometer Drive so original tach works. New Mallory Spark Plug Wires. New Chrome Oil Pan. Also a New Clutch and all related parts were installed (you get the receipts). ALSO FROM EXPERIENCED OBSERVATION: Recent New (and still like new) PPG Windshield. Recent New Master Cylinder. Recent New Front Brake Calipers & Pads. Recent New Power Steering Rack & Pump. Recent New Radiator Hoses. Recent New Stainless Steel Fuel Tank. Recent New Engine & Power Steering Belts. NO RUST in Bird Cage. T-Top Stainless Frame Pieces and Pot Metal End Pieces in Very Good Condition. Stingray side emblems in excellent condition. CORVETTE Lettering on rear fascia like new. Exhaust Bezels like new. (obviously recent). Exhaust Tips like new. (obviously recent). Front & Rear Bumper Chrome in Very Good Condition (no pitting). Recent New Michelin Symmetry P215/70/R15 Tires (at least 85% tread remaining and no indication of any unusual wear). FACTORY ORIGINAL 3 Clip Beauty Rings and Center Caps in excellent condition (see photos). It appears when the tires were installed either new Rally Rims were also installed or the originals were very nicely restored. T-Top Seals in very good condition. Door & Window Seals OK for now but should be replaced when car painted. Recent New Diehard Gold Battery (cranks like crazy) with shut of switch. Exhaust system in good condition. The mufflers are not as large as originals and produce an excellent exhaust note if you like more throatiness than the factory provided. Spare tire is like new. $13,900. 95,656 miles. April 25, 2010.
1) The Good: This is a NUMBERS MATCHING 4 SPEED CORVETTE. That alone gives it a value. It has power steering, brakes, and windows. It has an aftermarket big block hood, correct 8 inch rally wheels, and has a new carb, aluminum intake, and HEI distributor with a tach drive. The tires are Michelins with good tread, but has the hideous white wall showing. The wheels, trim rings, and center caps are all in good shape. The exterior looks much better in the pictures. I would plan on painting it. The car has all of the good stuff you want, and with some work, you can have a great car. The frame and suspension are great, and the engine and transmission are great as well. The water neck leaks a little bit at the intake, but I'm sure it's a quick fix of a gasket. If time allows, I'll take care of that before the auction ends.
The Bad: I mentioned the paint. It's worse in person than the photos show. I tried to take pictures of it in different lights and from different angles, but I couldn't capture it's true ugliness. That's my opinion, but I've owned many and I think it's ugly. The headlights come on and light up, but they don't raise because of the normal vacuum issues. The same with the wiper door. I think all of the gauges work, and it is pretty complete overall, but once again, not a show car. It's a good car that runs and drives well. It's complete and is a matching numbers 4 speed car. 94,834 miles. Color codes from the owner. Built date is J26. March 26, 2010.
