1970 CHEVROLET Corvette 454- Cortez, Colorado

Writing copyright D. S. Brown, photography copyright owner of Corvette 454.

This 1970 Corvette was listed for sale on the Hemmings website in 2014. The so called 'C3' body
style of the Corvette is popularly known as 'The Shark' style because it was based on the Mako
Shark II show car. The regular production Shark was introduced for the 1968 model year and
received some tweaks for 1969. The 1970 model year saw some noticeable alterations to the body.
Fender flares were added to the wheel wells to reduce chips in the paint due to rocks being thrown
up by the wide tires. The vents coming our behind the front wheels received an egg crate style
insert which matched the new front grille design.

The 1969 model year of the Corvette (and also the Camaro and its twin, the Firebird) was extended
into early 1970. The 1970 Corvette model year ran from January, 1970 until fall, 1970 which left
little time to build and sell 1970 model year Corvettes. Not surprisingly, the result was a low
production run of 17,316 cars.

The original owner bought this Corvette towards the end of the 1970 model run. He bought this
Corvette new from Lohmann Motors Inc. in Miles City Montana on September 3, 1970. At the time
he was 28 years old with a good career as a petroleum engineer. Over the years he purchased many
collector cars but always held onto the Corvette despite minimal use after 1980.

The Corvette is painted code 982 Donnybrook Green paired with a code 424 saddle tan custom
leather interior. The custom interior provides leather seat covers, thicker carpeting, wood grain
applique in door panels and console and carpeting on the bottom of the door panels. The leather
was available in either black or saddle.

Comfort options are minimal: U69 AM/FM radio and the rear chrome luggage rack.
No power steering, no power brakes, and no A/C.

The rest of the options are all high performance oriented: the LS5 454 390 HP engine, M21 4-speed
close ratio transmission, YE1 special 3.70:1 axle ratio Positraction all mean business.

The VIN 194370S415109 decodes:

1= Chevrolet
9= Corvette
4= V8 Engine
37= Coupe
0= 1970 Model year
S= St. Louis, Missouri final assembly plant
415109= Sequence number

1970 was the first year for the optional 454 engine which was created by putting a stroker crank
into the 427 block. The 454 engine stats were printed on a plate in the console which informed
drivers that their engine had 10.25:1 compression ratio, 390 HP and 500 Ft lbs. of torque. Although
the optional LS5 454 engine had more cubic inch capacity than the optional 427 of prior years it
used a low riser intake manifold which cost a few horsepower at the very top of the RPM range.
Some muscle car fans lamented the loss of the 427 but the extra cubes of the 454 created a very
flexible engine that effortlessly performed where other engines worked much harder to accomplish
the same result.

The owner noted the numbers on engine block pad: T0702CZU, 70S415109.

The original owner's Corvette purchase corresponded roughly with his marriage. The new couple
took the Corvette north to Banff, Alberta for their honeymoon. The Corvette was in Montana for 12
years, then spent 3 years in Wyoming when they moved. When the couple moved to Colorado in the
early 1980s the car was still titled in Wyoming. At this point in spite of the manual shift and lack of
power brakes or steering the owner's wife was driving the Corvette more than he was!

The Corvette is all original except for a repaint in 1974. Unhappy with the way the factory paint job
was wearing, the owner had the body stripped and painted back to original color and paint type. The
car has never been damaged and always stored inside.

Owning a fleet of collector cars and buying and selling classic cars allowed the Corvette to be driven

occasionally using a dealer plate but for all intents and purposes it was not driven much once the
move to Colorado was made. It shows 58,407 original miles in 2014 with the majority of the miles
accumulated prior to 1980.

The owner describes his car as,

Very tight and drives as good as when I bought it new.

In recent years new tires, brakes, exhaust and a throw out bearing were replaced on the car. Fiber-
optics, vacuum operated wipers and headlights work as new. The car still has the original window
sticker, protect-o-plate and T-top covers that came with the car when new. Now that he is 72 years
old the original owner is paring down his car collection, including his one owner Corvette.

On Oct 25, 2014 the car was sold. The original owner had the car 44 years and 52 days.
