Car history:
1972 Corvette LT-1 Red Convertible with rare M22 "Rock Crusher"
Likely 1 of 36 and only 29,024 actual miles.

I’ve owned this car for 37 years; purchased from the original owner’s brother in
1975. True mileage is only 29,024. It was my daily driver for just 2 years;
garaged continuously since 1977. Even at that early point I realized the car
represented the “end of an era”, so I bought another car in ’77 as a daily driver so
the mileage wouldn’t accumulate on this car. The rare solid-lifter LT-1 motor has
never been rebuilt and is original to the car, showing the correct VIN on the engine pad.

During Corvette’s 16-year “golden age” from ’56 to ’72 the marque’s icon status
was created by a very small percentage of cars with radical cam, solid-lifter motors.
1972 was the final year for this legendary feature in the form of the LT-1; only
405 Corvettes that final year were LT-1 convertibles. Since only 9% of production
in ’72 was Red this is likely 1 of just 36 or so Red LT-1 Convertibles. Since this
car was built in the final 5 to 6 weeks of production (June 12th) it’s likely one of
the last 5 or so Red Corvette Convertibles ever built with a radical cam, solid lifter
motor. True “Barn Finds” are increasingly difficult to find. If you’re looking for a
genuine “end of an era” icon, this is it.

Even rarer is the in-period Muncie M22 “Rock Crusher”, dealer installed by V.V.
Cooke Chevrolet in Louisville, KY. V.V. Cooke was a renowned Chevrolet dealer
with a national reputation for performance during the ‘60s and ‘70s. Their own
Corvette was SCCA National Champion for four straight years (’69, ’70, ’71 & ’72).
Driver Alan Barker was recently inducted into the National Corvette Museum Hall
of Fame. The M-22 plus the manual steering & windows make this car’s option
configuration quite similar to 1972’s ultra-rare ZR-1.

The Protect-O-Plate is included and shows the motor’s build date as April 7th, 1972
and the car’s sale date as July 8th, 1972. The Trim Tag shows the car’s build date
as June 12th, 1972.

I painted the car Silver in 1975 but this car is an original #973 Mille Miglia Red as
shown on the Trim Tag. Black vinyl interior with AM/FM radio. Power Brakes.
Also have the Auxiliary Hardtop. Some trim items such as interior door panels
and front fender vents are currently unattached but are included. When I purchased
the car it had headers already installed, so the factory cast iron exhaust manifolds
aren’t included. Also missing are the under-hood metal shields for the radio and
the smog pump. V.V. Cooke Chevrolet also installed the rare slant plug heads, but
the original heads are also included. The paint & soft top show considerable wear
from the years the car was daily driven (’72 to ’77). The brakes have the usual
Corvette issue of leaky calipers. Currently a Condition 4 -, the rarity of this car
would make it an excellent candidate for a top-flight NCRS or Bloomington Gold
caliber restoration.
